Odor from shower drain

On occasion I have had a odor come from the shower drain while underway on the highway. Now, after parking for some time, I have had several flies come from the drain. Is there some type of P-trap for the shower?

I have thought of removing the drain cover and getting a drain plug to keep the odor out during travel.

I used a ziplock bag with water to keep any smell out during travel.

Last time I had that, I removed the drain cover and used one of those barbed plastic drain cleaners and pulled a bunch of stinking hair out of the drain. Poured a box of baking soda in the drain and let it sit overnight. That ended the problem.

If it is hair, and whatever decides to stick to the hair , we found a mat at Wally World (you could probably find one on Amazon also) that covered the drain but is totally pouris so the water runs right through it. But it catches all the hair. And since we have two dogs that seem to shed everywhere, that's a big deal!

In over 2 years we've never had a problem with a clog or smell. It also covers that slick floor to make it non slippery.

Oil in drain

I found on previous rigs that if I had been awhile without using he shower then the water in the p-trap would evaporate and odours would make it up from the grey tank. If I knew it was going to sit I would put some mineral oil or similar into the trap to prevent evaporation.

Oil floats on water, water can’t evaporate!

Sorry no brand name, DW found it at WM where the shower accessories are. It's about 30x17 and has lots of little suction cups on the bottom. You can see them in the picture.

Thanks Gary - I'll take a look the next time we're at our local Walmart.

Chuck, I made a modification to the shower drain in our Cornerstone that is working really well for us. Kinda-sorta similar to what you posted.

I assumed few if any others would be interested, so I didn't take any photos or post anything about it. But since the subject has come up, I'll do that in the next day or two.

That would be great Larry. Shower drains are something that is normally neglected until there is a problem that can easily be avoided.

I would look under where the shower is to see what kind of P Trap you have for the shower... I have a 5th Wheel and it has a hepvo p trap... this kind of trap has a rubber bladder inside that can tear or get wedged open (allowing gas to come back up)... It is easily opened so you can inspect the bladder, clean or replace...
