On The Go Softener potential fail

Wanted alert everyone that may be using an On The Go water softener to a potential part failure.
We have had our OTG softener for two years with no issues, works great and very happy with it.

Today I was recharging the system as I always do (following their directions). While unscrewing the intake side, the original on/off coupler separated in my hands.

Attached is a picture of the coupler put back together as it should look.Click image for larger version

When the inlet hose is connected to this coupler, the fitting should create some resistance to keep it from leaking. I put it back together but it would not stay that way. There is a small rib that holds the two pieces together. And that is where it failed. Once that rib has worn, there is nothing to keep it from blowing out.

Luckily, I had extra hose fittings and could deal with it.
I may also be adding a pan and water detection alert to this as well. As it is, the first notice I get that I have a leak is too late.

I threw the plastic valve away and replaced with a brass shutoff valve.

X2 replacing with brass. I changed all of mine to quick disconnect brass fittings when new. Good heads up, plastic will soon fail on our type of use, connecting and disconnecting often.

I normally don’t go looking for things to fail. I know brass is the way to go and will do so soon.
Just thought anyone who recently purchased one might not readily suspect it to fail.
Hope it keeps someone from having a disaster on their hands.

Best way??

The lowest priced one is best way

The portable units all use table salt, same resin beads and work on same principle (beads attract the minerals/salt cleans the beads)

Ditto. I'll add that I also use brass quick connects for easy hook up

I have the double standard model and I love it. Is it the best? Who knows, but my water is very soft.

FYI, The resin will last longer with a carbon pre-filter. I use a 4" brass extension and filter housing.

As Old-Biscuit said they are all the same, much like the makers of water pipe. I have had my OTG for 16 years. They were the first unit to manufacture a table salt regeneration softener, so I purchased one. I have replaced the beads once and it's still going strong. All of the units on the market today have plastic fittings that will wear out quickly. They all want to be the least expensive on the market. A good heads up from bevandtomH, his problem will not be with On the Go only, it will be with any of RV type portable water softeners.

These have worked well for me $8.99 for six at Harbor Freight. Everything for the MH are in these fitting including the main hose, down to the pressure washer.

We have an On The Go, and if you look around RV parks, they seem pretty popular. Not sure “cheapest” is always better. (I don’t even know if they’re expensive vs the competition…)
