Pay attention to the subtle messages your coach sends.

Since we got into RVing, I’ve performed our PM work, repairs, and mods.

I’ve been wrenching on everything from turbine aircraft to fire trucks, automobiles, and now RVs for most of my life.

I don’t make a habit of being blissfully ignorant when it comes to mechanical symptoms.

However, this coach sometimes makes me feel like a complete rookie. Looking backward, I can see quite a few times when things weren’t right and I missed it.

My suggestion to others is to pay attention to your instincts. For example, from day one our coach has always labored to start. The symptom was slow cranking and stumbling to life in an unsettled idle for the first few seconds of life. I asked all the experts and all agreed the ISL starts hard.

I found that hard to believe, but accepted it as a difference of this coach from our last.

As I recently discovered, we had a bad chassis battery from day one. With 2 good batteries, the engine starts with authority and settles right down to a smooth idle. Bad on me for not pursuing my instincts long ago.

The recent hydraulic thing really aggravates me because I was led to believe the reservoir cap was being improperly tightened, resulting in the overflow. Evidently, there is rocket science in a wedge cap. Again, the experts were wrong. We had a fan fall off the shaft of the motor, so the hydraulic fluid was getting very hot. Had I ignored the experts and simply taken a look at the entire system from stem to stern, I would have found the problem.

I’m really not that flaky, seriously.

My suggestion to others, is to absolutely trust your instincts and pursue seemingly innocuous symptoms until you’re satisfied at the result. Our coach is one heck of a coach, but it speaks much more softly than our last one.

I need to learn to listen more closely.

-Matt AKA “The Rookie”

Matt, we all learn the hard way. It sounds like we’re a lot a like

Crawling around the engine compartment looking for signs of friction or heat, has become my passion. Too many times I’ve sat in the MH and simply judged it on appearance.

I agree, always be on the lookout for things that just don’t seem right. Recently I saw condensation water dripping from a location that did not appear appropriate. I found that it was coming from the dash air conditioner in my five-month-old 2017 anthem . The drain line was completely dysfunctional when delivered. The clear plastic tubing was crimped and twisted in several locations and then zip tied to a larger bundle of wires under the dash and above the generator. This caused the condensation water to back up inside the unit which is now beginning to rust out. Entegra is looking into it but I have not heard back from them yet. I performed the easy fix myself but the lack of real quality control which is rampant in the RV industry is pretty clear here and would have resulted in A total failure of the AC had this been allowed to continue.Click image for larger version

Good reminder, Matt

Chuck, I think the bigger problem in your pictures is that, even after much complaining, there is still no air filter on the incoming air of the air conditioner. If you put the air conditioner in normal mode, those flaps pictured, open up and all the dirt and debris from the road enters your coach. Not to mention that it will also stick to the wet coils causing inefficiency in your air conditioner. I have a 2018 and still no filter!

Chuck, Check the plug on the left side of the generator for corrosion. That is the condensation problem that drips on the plug causing remote starting not to work....a common problem. Coating the pins with dielectric grease and taping the plug with electrical tape will prevent problem in the future. Those plugs and not very weather proof.
Another reason I don't drive in heavy rain.

That' s why I am not there. Most of the on the road problems I have had personally have been after driving in heavy rain, so I just don't do it anymore. Lot less frustrating to park for a couple of hours than troubleshooting for a lot more hours.

The plug on the generator is fine – no corrosion but The rust is occurring in the AC unit and Tray beneath it

Hi Chuck,

I've pretty much stopped using electrical tape and have started using silicone rescue tape: Rescue Tape - The World's #1 Self-Fusing Silicone Tape

It provides sufficient electrical insulation (800v) and much better prevention of water intrusion. They even suggest that you could make a temporary repair on a leaking radiator hose.

Oh, if you ever need to remove it, it's easy to cut with a sharp knife and leaves no residue.

Take care,
Stu

That tray beneath the ac unit is Entegra's answer to condensation running down in the wiring. Our 2011 didn’t have the tray and water went everywhere! On some units, they did away with the drain hose all together and let the condensate drain on the tray.

I used the same on mine, but didn't mention it as many don't know what it is. Glad you brought it up. The important thing is sealing that plug, sooner or later it usually causes problem.

I'm afraid that there are too many people on the production line that think good enough is...good enough
