I mounted mine vertically on the wall to the rear of the power cord reel. Chuck, I dont see how there is much room to mount it in front of the reel since at least on my coach, the reel is mounted far forward in that compartment. If I have to get to it to replace the board, it is only remove 4 screws that hold the reel to the floor, swing the power cord reel out of the way, and I have easy access to the HW-50. Not a lot of work in that process.
And I think most people understand, but even on the new coaches, what you are getting is a power transfer switch which has a Surge Suppressor incorporated in it. If you get a major power surge then what is blown is the Surge Suppressor part of the unit. When people say, "It's one surge and done", that means that after the MOVs blow to protect the switch from the surge, then they are gone and done reset. However, the transfer switch continues (in all likelihood) to function, but you just dont have any surge suppression system, or low or brown out voltage protection. That is what the HW-50 is doing that is different than your transfer swith. The progressive in front of the transwer switch disconnects the coach from the shore (or shore and generator ) power source if there are voltage or grounding or wiring faults on your power source and keeps the coach isolated until that problem is removed.
