Rand McNally Fraud Warning

Just got this email from Rand McNally..... apparently they are having problems with someone selling fraudulent map updates. Since we all have this product, FYI

"An important message to our customers:
It has come to our attention that a number of our customers have been taken advantage of by scam companies pretending to be Rand McNally and selling map and device updates.

Please know that:

Rand McNally's full website address is https://www.randmcnally.com
Rand McNally does not have chat or a pop-up chat on the website at https://www.randmcnally.com
Rand McNally does not sell map updates as a separate product — map updates are included with all newer model devices
There are a number of fake websites using "Rand McNally" (and other brand names) that pop up and then disappear. These fake sites attempt to fool customers and secure credit card information

Unfortunately, with the ongoing pandemic and uncertainty, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of social media and online scams. In fact, in a recent poll of members by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, 92% of respondents expect to see even more fraud during the next 12 months. If you have been scammed, it's advisable to contact your bank or credit card company and contest the charge. "

So, I am not seeing a map update link on the website. Any insight as to why?

You download software that stays on your machine and you use their software to download updates. Unless they have changed things.

Its called "Rand McNally DOCK"

Rand Mcnally has been having all sorts of problems with their website lately. Trying to download the Dock software returns errors no matter which OS you select.

I just reinstalled MacOS 11.0 Big Sur and since I couldn't download a new copy, I dug out the old version of the Dock software that I had saved. It is not compatible - it says "This version of Rand McNally Dock can only be installed on MacOS version 10.15 or higher." I'm pretty sure that 11.0 is higher than 10.15...

I tried, today, to run the Dock software on a Windows 10 platform.

After initializing the Dock software, it opens to the registration page (not normal). Input the necessary registration (name, email) and clicked "Send", resulting in the following error: "We're sorry. A network-related error has occurred. Please try again later."

Swell!

Take care,
Stu

So I just got this reply from RM when I emailed their tech support:

Thank you for taking the time to contact Rand McNally.

In an effort to be transparent regarding the recent disruption to our network, we are making you aware of a cyber incident that is affecting our hosted and network systems. With this, the option to check for updates on your device is inaccessible.

We have taken significant steps forward toward restoration and continue to investigate for more insight into the incident and how to prevent future disruption. While we are unable to provide a timeline at this moment, we appreciate the trust and confidence you have in Rand McNally to move as quickly as possible to resume to normal operations. We apologize for any temporary impact this may have on your obligations and will work with you to address those demands as we restore.

Hopefully they get back on-line soon.

I sounds like RM was hacked. The hackers might have taken the customers list and contacting customers with the scam Gary posted.

It appears so.

While they've acknowledged an "incident" they've not stated the full extent of it.

There is speculation that it was a ransomware attack as the site hasn't been fully functional since around Thanksgiving - they had a "We're upgrading our site" page for the longest while.

It was a major attack that happened just before Thanksgiving, and took them completely offline in the beginning. Some say that it was a ransomware attack (remember, Garmin was hit with that as well); however, Rand McNally is dark about the details of the attack. They have been bringing their services back online slowly, piece-by-piece, but my guess is that us RVers are not as much of a priority as the money generating commercial industries, such as the truckers.

I had (and still have) a Rand McNally GPS that I never could get to hook up to their site right. Every time I wanted to load a trip I had to go through a big rig a marole to get it done. This was two plus years ago. I finally got fed up with it and back to Garmin. I have not used the Garmin either for the last two months so can not comment on their current situation. And yes I would imagine they are more concerned with the commercial truck market as that really is where the money is. It is used every day compared to us that use it occasionally. I know there are some rver's that are going to use it more than most of us.

I asked these questions:

Does this error indicate some problem with my system, or is the problem with your system?

If the problem is with your system, when might I expect your system to be returned to service?

And received this response:

Thank you for taking the time to contact Rand McNally.

Looks like it's gonna be awhile.

Thought the same thing while I was reading it. I am glad I was able to mirror Waze on the over head TV. Thankfully Google Maps are updated daily and with a paper map, I'm good to go.
Also though about new coach owners. On my 19 the RM would not work until the cards was updated. The 21 has worked locally so far...
