Oops, quoted the wrong post above, sorry. The reference was ronlin11 finding loose connections (great find) and the battery post this week where some were suggesting under powered batteries to save money. Under powered batteries will have the same results as loose cables, but not as easily fixed.

I would much rather pay a mobile tech to do the job and I would be his assistant. The job would be completed correctly and I would have learned something. The money I will pay the tech…. That is called tuition.

Another problem that should have indicated electrical problems was gauge problems. While on my last trip the DEF gauge dropped from 4 bars down to 1bar in a matter of a few minutes and then the low DEF alarm went off. I pulled over and checked the DEF level and it was over half a tank. Started the coach and it was back to 4 bars? On the way home from the trip the fuel gauge dropped from half full to less than a quarter tank in a matter of minutes. As we traveled it jumped back to half and then down again to quarter or less. When I filled it after the trip it only took 45 gallons. When I got to the storage yard I pulled into an empty lot to dress the tires and it would not start when I was done with the tires. I tried jumping it with the house batteries but no help just a click. Checked the cables but did not see a problem (should have looked closer). Called the mobile repair (thru FMCA) for a jump or tech and had to wait hours. Kept trying to start and all of a sudden it started and I cancelled the mobile and pulled it back into the garage where I store it and planned to replace the starter motor.

That is when I started this thread. Again thanks to all who responded and I hope my experience will help someone!!

Personally I might seek a repair shop, but my DP has a starter that weighs in probably close to 100 pounds. I have two bolts that would require a special tool to access - the bottom two are rock solid so I have little option but hope the two hidden ones are as well (thank you Cummins). I would suggest you disconnect every positive terminal on every battery aboard before you play with the starter. That line is typically un-fused and not turned off by any switch or key.

Hired a state employed diesel mechanic trained on cummins, to replace mine at a campsite. He removed the battery cables without throwing the switches. That worked, however in the middle of the night the horn went off. Long story short, I had to buy an SCM from Spartan, have them flash it, and installed it myself. a $1600 event.

I have a Fleetwood/freightliner XC with Cummins. When i stop to fuel it wouldn't crank over at all, then 20-30 minutes it starts normal. This happened 6 months ago and I thought it was shut off in gear but now I know that has nothing to do with the trans R/N/D position. I'm guessing the starter overheats when engine is shut down and has to wait to cool off. Of course its hard to trouble shoot when it only happens on the road.
Has anyone else seen started trouble like this?
