Replacing Starter Motor

I would appreciate it if anyone who has replaced a starter motor could give me some advice on replacing mine. I have researched the forums and watched a You Tube video on an ISX truck but would like to hear from someone who has actually done an ISL in a motor home. I purchased a new one from Spartan and will receive it next week. The only thing that I can see being a problem is that one of the three bolts holding it in is hard to reach. Again any information would be helpful.

Ok I can help you with that. I did one on 450 IsL really simple and straight forward. Only thing have someone in decent shape help hold it up til you get 2 bolts in. Or any mobile guys about 120. Bucks be gone in 40 or 50 minutes you will see they will bring a youngster. LOL. It is about 3 or 4 on 10 scale just have a helper.

Thanks for the reply. I believe that just shutting off the chassis batteries and unplugging the coach should stop any power to the starter so electrical should not be a problem. I will use an extra long extension for the hidden bolt and will have a friend help hold the new/old starter. Just want to cover all of the bases.

Yes. You have got this good part is you literally it being your coach you will make sure it's perfect. Get a couple flashlights. Depending on who's hand is free. Yes flip the rear breaker in battery compartment. Not sure if there's a fuse for starter in that same compartment could not hurt. Keep a eye peeled for any broken zip ties etc any thing rubbing due to vibration. leaking hoses that simply need hose clamp snugging. Especially the ones on the radiator while you are there.

Shutting of the chassis battery with a small switch to a battery disconnect may not cut power to the starter cables. The big switchs that you turn a large knob, yes.

Simple test is to switch it off and test for 12 vots on the large terminal on the starter solenoid.

Always be safe and pull the ground cables from the chassis batteries.
Pull the hardest to access bolt first, the one on the backside you can't see.
To access that one you'll need a long two foot extension. Some of the newer ISXs we had in our fleet used a bolt with the inverted torx head so you may need to purchase a new socket.
Careful, that suckers heavy.

When I replaced mine, the bolts holding the starter were the 12 point type, not the usual hex nut. However, once I replaced the starter I did replace the original bolts with hex type. For ease for the next guy.

Very important information. Starter motors draw lots of amps when cranking and are connected directly to the battery because battery cutoff switches don't like to handle that many amps. Generally the battery disconnect switches are connected after the starter to prevent any power delivered to the solenoids, etc. that feed the starter and ret of the chassis components. My guess is that you will need to disconnect the chassis battery to prevent having to deal with a live battery cable at the starter. As mentioned above - test to be sure.

An update. Disconnected the negative cables on the starter and went to disconnect the positive but tested it first even though I had shut off the cutoff switch. Still indicated power so I went to disconnect the chassis battery cables. I had checked them prior and thought they were fine but when I took a wrench to them the positive cable was very loose and all the others were fairly loose. Just four months ago I had replaced the chassis batteries so I thought I had secured the cables. Anyway they were loose so I tightened them all and now all is good. I will keep the new starter for backup so I will probably never need it. Anyway all is well now. Thank you for the replies.

Never work on anything electrical without disconnecting the batteries ground cable. One spark can fried the engine computer that is nearby. Why take a chance when 5 minutes will be all it takes to work safe?

Edit: Sorry I wrote this before seeing your update. Glad your got it fixed.

Excellent find, love the easy fixes. Brings up a good point on battery replacement this week. It doesn't take much to put in under powered batteries and the problems they can cause trying to save a few dollars.

I have owned this coach for seven years and have never had loose battery cables and that is why I did not expect them to be loose. I should have checked them more closely and surely will in the future!!!
