Chuck,

What does Cummings typically charge for an ECM update or is under warranty? We are headed to Orlando and Naples in December and I might try to get that done before we leave if I can.

Cummins warranty is 5 years, so no charge. If you are coming this way, Cummins in Ocala FL is fantastic. They also have great overnight parking with water and electric under beautiful oak trees and all grass. It is a straight shot off of I-75. 80% of there business is MH's, so they are on top of our needs.

Ok, I don't know what dash you have but on the system used by Workhorse the 'Average' is for the last 50 miles. so it self resets every so often. No need for you to do it.

If you have the display on "Average" from time to time it goes crazy, something like 144MPG or such an outlandish figure.. That is a reset, give it a few miles and it's back to accurate.

The "instant" millage is done much the same way but it resets every much much faster. I do not know the spacing but it's either every unit time (like 1 second) or every tick of the millage sensor or some such.

I was very frustrated to learn that AMPG couldn't be reset on the 2017's. Both Entegra and Spartan blamed Cummins. Apparently the data to reset isn't sent.

Helpfully they pointed out that you can go to a Cummins facility and have the MPG reset.

Obviously I now go by one at the beginning of every trip.

They did tell me that there have been a lot of complaints and that the comments have been passed on to Cummins, but that the fix is not simple.

That is one piece of data I try not to look at.

After my experience, I believe it depends on what ECM program the engine left Cummins factory programmed with. If any work is preformed at Cummins, they automatically do any updates.

There are also Spartan ECM updates that stopped all the bogus Check Engine Light codes from being thrown. Being that is for the Drivers Information Center, maybe that ECM affected the reset feature. A late 2015 may have all the ECM updates.

Asked Spartan, got this response:

The average fuel economy is no longer resettable. Not really by design, however the earlier units used the computer in the gauge package use your fuel level, vehicle speed and throttle position to calculate/estimate average fuel economy. In today’s units all of the information for the gauges comes from the Engine ECM which makes it more accurate however it cannot be reset except with the Cummins Insite software at a Cummins dealer. It does give an average so if your fuel economy increases or decreases it will show however it will be smaller adjustments due to being a continuous calculation.

Thank You

One not too expensive option to regain trip level reset capability would be a Scangauge D - hooks up to the J1939 network connector under the dash.

Brobox, my coach is a 2017 Anthem, which fits right in with the comments about not being resettable.

To me it still isn't a satisfactory answer. With all the technology available, there should be a way to provide software to calcualte and reset. Maybe not in the DIC but it should be possible.

Emerson, I have to totally agree, it use to be there, now it's gone....Why? It makes no sense being that it is a valuable tool for those that try to conserve fuel as required on most new vehicles by the EPA.

Resetting average fuel mpg

Since Spartan replaced or reprogrammed my LMC over a year ago to correct the 1081 FMI 19 message I also have not been able to reset my Average Miles Per Gallon as I used to on our 2014. As unbelievable as it seems (believe me I couldn't believe Spartan's response either) I also have been told by Spartan's Mr. Scott Wixson if I want to reset it, it has to be done at a Cummings facility that has the required software. Well recently I was informed by Wes Redfield at Spartan that the software has finally been corrected so the Average Miles Per Gallon can once again be reset at will without paying Cummings $$$$. I will not have our coach back to Middlebury to have this reprogramming done till next spring so if anyone is in a position to get it done now please report back. PM me if you need any other info.

Steve, thanks for that news. However, Rob's idea of a Scanguage for $140. vs $800. in fuel to go to Spartan, I think I'll go with Rob's idea. That is crazy one would have to go all the way back to Entegra or Spartan to get it corrected.

Chuck,
I said Middlebury just because I will be there for Homecoming next year. I believe the download can be done at a Spartan or Cummings facility so I would check with Wes Redfield at Spartan. Otherwise I agree it would be cost prohibitive to drive to Michigan for something that should have not occurred.
