Road Trip In-Motion v. Trav'ler

As a long time satellite TV subscriber, 12 hours, I find I have a lot to learn.

Last night was a clear Idaho evening and my initial Dish experience was great; good reception and impressive definition. I woke this morning to high overcast and drizzle. I can get a few channels but get partial and complete signal loss on most. Dish said this is an antenna fault, not Dish, the overcast and drizzle are interfering with the reception. If that's true the cable company commercials are painfully true.

Will upgrading to a Trav'ler improve reception?

Absolutely. When I had a dome antenna, many mornings I could get nothing because of mist and dew, laying on the dome and blocking the signal. And I often lost the signal in rain. With the Travler, no more mist and dew problems, and only very occasionally lose signal in the heaviest of rain events like big thunderstorms.

I upgrade from a dome for two major reasons, loss of signal that you are experiencing. Also, when we were in Maine and the upper Great Lakes, I was to far north for the little dome dish to pick up a signal except on maybe 119 if the conditions were perfect.

When we got home from that trip I upgraded to the Traveler and have been 100% satisfied. So much so, I didn't even hesitate to order the Traveler for the Entegra even if I have to install the change over kit for Dish which is $300. from Winegard. Rain fade is now almost non existent except in a heavy down pour.

From the wire you showed in an earlier post, you are pre-wire for a Traveler so the change over should be easy if you decide to go that way. Also the Travler for Dish is $300. less than the one for Direct TV.

Vance, I'd also added a Traveller; when you look at the Dish footprint on line, the Pacific NW isn't the strongest reception across the country. If you had drizzle as well, that is likely a problem.

I can actually switch back to the In Motion as it is still up there. Hopefully there won't be another Jodi Arias trial that DW HAS TO watch while we are driving:(

Confused

If I ordered the Trav'ler option, the In-Motion is still installed and I can change back and forth?

My limited understanding is the Trav'ler option allows for HD but not in motion viewing. Help.

Having gone thru the ordering process with lots of questions I was told the following. If you order the traveler they do not install the dome. It's one or the other, not both. After having the non motion dome and have friends with the traveler I opted for the directv traveler.

Correct....I had my traveller installed on the rear third of the coach 9 months into this ride and kept the In Motion....primarily because I didn't want the hassle of trying to sell it, wasn't going to give it away, and didn't want filled holes.

Thanks to hogdriver's post http://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/wine...sh-182231.html

I got a little eduction. As of last week, Entegra was trying to decide what they were going to do for installing a Canadian Traveler. What they are installing now is for Direct TV only. However a $300. kit can be purchased from Windgard which will convert the Direct TV travel to a Dish Network Travel and that will work on Bell in Canada.

I don't understand all this satellite stuff but are you saying I can use this on direct tv like Shaw (star choice?) can all direct TV use the same dish? I know the signals are different. but if it is for direct, can I still use it for Shaw?

The Direct TV Trav'ler satellite antenna that Entegra installs now will NOT work with any of the Canadian Satellite companies. (from what I was told by Entegra) This model is the ONLY one Entegra will install at this time. I do not know what sat antenna works with Shaw DIRECTV HD in the RV - Winegard TRAV'LER Automatic Mobile DIRECTV HD Satellite Antenna

However the above model has a kit you can purchase and install, available from Winegard to convert the above Satellite Dish to this model. This model WILL work with a Canadian Sat company, but only Bell. Satellite RV - Winegard TRAV'LER Automatic Mobile DISH HD Satellite Antenna

You might want to call Winegard and ask them the question about what works with Shaw. This is the only information I have but there could be more from Winegard.

Interesting in that the price difference between the Direct TV and the Dish Winegard Traveller antennas is about $250-300 (Dish being the lesser). As to Canadian reception and antennas, call the customer service at Winegard...I have found them to be knowledgable and very helpful.

Thank you both for your replies, I will call and see what they have to say.
I was thinking more from a convenient perspective as it is my understanding it does not require holes in the roof??
I was thinking if it was set up for direct tv signal it would pick up any direct signal in the area no matter the country... I have a feeling that direct is not a generic term, is it a company in the US?
