RV taking on pop-up-tent on I-75

Yup, was not fun.

We had a pop-up-tent fly out of a truck right in front of us, directly in our path on I-75 in Florida. Unavoidable for sure. Still accessing the damage. Took out the exhaust on generator and ripped a rather large slit in the front driver-side tire.

A very uneasy feeling for sure when there is just nothing you can do.

RV taking on pop-up-tent on I-75

When I lost the exhaust on my generator due to a deer, State Farm paid big bucks to have the exhaust manifold examined. The Cummins shop said they are often cracked in such situations. I. My case it wasn’t but large labor charges to remove the generator check. About $2,000 just for the generator damage. I would get insurance involved for sure.

Very scary, did the other pull over? Once we had a load bar fall off the top of a tractor trailer in front of us, hit the road and bounced back up into our bumper. Had we been following a little closer it could have gone our windshield. The truck never slowed down, probably didn't know it was even up there or forgot.

It was a pickup truck with tailgate down pulling trailer with a 4 wheeler. No they did not stop.

Must be something going on down here. We must have seen a million trailers with 4 wheelers.

People are flocking south for the winter. With the borders open, snowbirds are everywhere!

If driving a large rv made me do anything, it’s don’t follow: contractors, open pick ups with stuff not secured, U-Hauls, other rv’s, semis, open trailers with stuff everywhere, etc.,…..
Best of luck on the repairs.

I know the people here know, but...

Tie that stuff down! I would rather not be explaining to a judge and jury in my manslaughter case that I had tie-downs in the truck, but I was too lazy and negligent to spend the TWO MINUTES to use them.

We were 200 yards behind a dump truck with 2" stones. Overloaded and no cover. 1 stone bounced into the windshield. We had a hard time getting the driver to pull over. She cussed at as profusely. Cop showed up said we should have pulled her over at the next exit, ya right. Said we had $300 damage. Final was another 3 grand. Took 3 weeks to replace.
Moral: we try to stay away from all traffic. But...

That is the truth and it started way earlier this year. The traffic on our streets in Sept were like Jan in other years. People coming south drive extra cautious this year, it is unreal. Another reason FL insurance rates are so high.

The border just opened for Canadians getting the heck out before winter and before the countries change their minds about crossing.

Many of my Canadian attendees to Quartzsite crossed the border the first morning it was permitted, and were taking no chances. I would hazzard the guess that the density of Canadian from the eastern providences that head for Florida and points south were among the first crossers.

Similar situation happened to us several years ago. Van with a fake Christmas tree (in a box) flew off, also on I-75 in Florida, and no where to go but run over it. Driver didn't stop, limped into the nearest exit, no mobile mechanics available on a Sunday, but I was fortunate to find a trucker willing to tie up the gen exhaust with a coat hanger so I could drive to have repairs done. I have since always been uneasy to travel behind any vehicle with something that could end up in my path.

An added note about our Florida traffic - it is horrendous, and everyone should avoid I-4 if at all possible.

Another illustration for the need for a good dash cam again. By good I mean good enough to record the licence plate of the vehicle in front of you. I added a camera that records to the back of my car trailer that we tow. Why? Because a friend was rear ended while sitting at a traffic light and the guy tried to claim my friend was backing up. DYK that driving with the tailgate open in Ohio can get you stopped? That's because the law says the license plate has to be clearly visible. I think that may be true in most states.
