RV TRAVEL heavy emphasis on Cummins

Feature story in today’s edition of https://www.rvtravel.com/motorhomes-...cummins-blame/rv travel.com places a heavy emphasis on Cummins failure to provide a workaround until greater relief can be brought to DEF crisis affecting Entegra (in particular) DP MH.

Here's the working link. https://www.rvtravel.com/motorhomes-...cummins-blame/
After reading the article, Am surprised the Cummins has not petitioned the NHTSA for corrective action where the problem lies, the manufactures. A band-aide fix to gt someone home would be nice, but why not eliminate the problem. JMO

article shared senior Cummins leadership that is not yet motivated to petition the EPA and provide relieve for RV community.

You know, just in case you wanted to help change their opinion......

If you’d like to share your thoughts with Cummins management, here’s a list of folks at Cummins. We’re told they are all aware of the DEF sensor nightmare.

Vice Chairman: Tony Satterthwaite – tony.satterthwaite@cummins.com
Chief Executive Officer: Tom Linebarger – tom.linebarger@cummins.com
President and Chief Operating Officer: Jennifer Rumsey – Jennifer.rumsey@cummins.com

It’s hard to believe that Spartan didn’t respond to authors request for comment. And from such a forthcoming company.

First it has become obvious, Cummins doesn't care, Spartan doesn't care, Freightliner doesn't care, RV mfg's don't care, government agencies and elected officials don't care. If this was happening with frequency in the automotive industry with diesel pickups there would be massive outrage and calls to elected officials to do something, the big three would be all over it to avoid loss of market share and the news media would have a field day. In the RV world no one cares except the owner who faces loss of use or breakdown away from home. There are no excuses that this is still going on without a fix. Cummins and the chassis manufactures simply don't want to take responsibility or bear the cost to fix it. Ford Pinto all over again. Just my opinion on the whole issue

I have had the same question with my two failed DEF heads that Spartan installed. Transparency is not one of their strong qualities. They seem to be proving that over and over.

I'm wondering what a bright lawyer has not picked up on the potential for a serious Class Action lawsuit. Got to be more than a few lawyers among the mix of RVers concerned with the DEF issues. The EPA has mandated regulations the industry is having difficulty addressing with reliable solutions. Cummins was smart leaving the tank and DEF head to the chassis manufacturer taking them out of the responsibility loop yet provides all related software.

I sent an email to all addresses that (short form) politely asked them to confirm or deny that they were refusing to request a temporary fix that would allow families and businesses to operate while waiting for parts. Emailed Sunday night so they would have it waiting for them Monday morning. No response.

I got a response from Cummins today. Actually was surprised that they responded at all - but not surprised that the response really doesn’t shed any light on their actions. Here it is -

Good Afternoon Linda,

Thank you for contacting Cummins. Please know that we have been working with, and continue to work with, our OEM partners to address the industry-wide DEF sensor challenges being faced by customers. In conjunction with our OEMs, we have supported the development of more robust solutions that are in production and that also require microprocessors, and the global microprocessor constraints are inhibiting the industry’s ability to manufacture these components at the rate desired. We are also having discussions with our OEMs to consider other ways to mitigate this issue in an effort to best serve our customers, including potentially approaching the regulatory agencies to explore possible solutions. We are doing everything we can to minimize the impact on customers and to keep their engines and vehicles running optimally.

Kindest Regards,

John Tyner
Executive Escalations Leader

Linda, Thank you for that follow up. That covers the first 5 years, I wonder what the next 5 years will bring?

First he says "We are also having discussions with our OEMs to consider other ways to mitigate this issue in an effort to best serve our customers, including potentially approaching the regulatory agencies to explore possible solutions"

Then he says "We are doing everything we can to minimize the impact on customers and to keep their engines and vehicles running optimally."

Looks like Entregra & Newmar owners need to start sending emails to the top brass asking them to comment on the above since it looks like Cummins is trying to put the blame for not doing anything on the OEM's

I wonder how long Cummins is going to discuss this, until the shortage is over?

The big problem I see is Cummins is the only game in town, what other options do OEM's have?

If Cummins does go and try to get approval from the regulatory agencies, how are they going to be able to implement it? How long it is going to take to get the software ready to upload? Who is going to pay for the cost to do such.
