San Antonio to Big Bend (Lajitas) via Hwy 90
We are headed to Lajitas in few weeks and I'm thinking about taking Hwy 90 instead of I 10 this trip but the trip planner isn't showing any rest stops, picnic areas, pull overs or fuel stops. Has anyone driven this route and are there any places to give the dogs a stretch?

A very scenic trip and it is West Texas, a lot of open spaces for the animals.
Uvalde a nice town. Great camping at Bracketville in the back of the old Fort. Del Rio is a good Border town(Broke Mill RV Park, owner Mike is a good guy) and Sanderson will give you another stop.

We just did the San Antonio to Lajitas Tx leg about two months ago. We asked and received good advice to take Highway 90. We did it on a Saturday and it was easy. About 7 hours.
A couple of things. Stock up before you leave San Antonio as there are very few big box stores west of San Antonio. Decide the route south from 90. We took Highway 385 Marathon through Big Bend NP. You have to pay for access through BBNP, but you get access for 7 days, unless you qualify for the senior pass.
Also speed limit in park is 45 mph and can be slow. You can keep going on 90 till Alpine and go south on118. About 35 extra miles but probably faster. However, scenery is park is terrific and worth any extra time.
Big Bend NP is spectacular !!!!

Plenty of gas to Uvalde and plenty of pull over space for puppies.

An HEB with fuel in Del Rio. Stop at the Roy Bean Museum and rest area in Langtry (right on 90)

I was stationed in Del Rio for 5 yrs, and I can say that is a great route. 90 is a great scenic hwy. Lake Amistad just north of Del Rio has some nice stopping places.
Good luck!

We are going that route in mid May - were planning on taking I-10, but may rethink that. Is there really more to see on Hwy 90?

We live in San Antonio and have made numerous trips to Lajitas including one in March of this year. Take 90 and don't give it a second thought. Turn South in Alpine after stopping at the Gage Hotel in Marathon for a look around. In Alpine a stop at he Railroad Blues Bar may be appropriate or dinner at the Riata. Then the 100 mile drive to Terlingua fallowed by the 17 miles to Lajitas. No fuel between Alpine and Terlingua. Plenty of fuel in Terlingua.

Here are pictures of the uniquely decorated Gage Hotel in the Bar and the dining area. There are many other interesting hand crafted accents in the Hotel. Well worth a visit in Marathon TX.
