San Diego with an Entegra

We will be traveling to San Diego this September for our grandson's graduation from Marine Corp boot camp and am looking for recommendations for a good campground for a 45' coach. It'll be just the two of us and our German Shepherd (which in the past hasn't always been allowed in some California campgrounds). We don't need to be right on top of the marine base but need to be within striking range with our Jeep so outskirts is fine unless an in-town site is decent and has full hookups.

Anyone have any experience in this area?

Chula Vista KOA is nice but all campsites in that area will be expensive

I kind of figured this was going to cost me. But after spending enough money on diesel fuel at current prices to get from Wisconsin to San Diego and back again I figure that'll be the least of my worries. There'll be a lot of sack lunches.

Hi Mark,

Here's where we stayed while visiting our daughter while she was in the Navy.
She has since retired after 10 years.

We were able to find a 60 ft site that easily worked for our Aspire and 15ft trailer without having to unhook.

Santee Lakes
9310 Fanita Parkway, Santee, CA 92071
Telephone: 619-596-3141 | Fax: 619-449-4694

Hope this works as a possible option if needed.

Cheers

Close. You might look north in the Oceanside/Carlsbad area. That's not too far for a campground, maybe even one of the state parks. Try this website -

We have stayed three times at Mission View RV Park which is right in town. Not huge and expansive, but right in the middle of things and we have liked it.

I don't see that one. I see Mission Bay RV Resort, which is in town and on Mission Bay. Sounds like its just a blacktop lot that's packed pretty tight, close to Campland. Don't know if that one is very big rig friendly

We stay at Mission Bay RV park with our 45' and Ram pickup. We are at our daughters during the day so we aren't at the campground very long so the tight spots aren't a problem for us.

Sorry....my fingers and left lobe of my brain typed something other than what my right lobe was thinking.

Yes, it is "close", but we had no difficulty getting our 45' Anthem and our Cornerstone in our locations. We didn't want trees so requested being in the clear for satellite reception. We were on concrete. Other options in San Diego were really packed closely together.

We wanted to be close to town, and this was. It is part of a city park and the bay but privately owned and operated. We enjoyed the stay. If you want to be in town, this is it. Also, some great neighborhood bars and Japanese restaurants (great happy hour) nearby. When we go to San Diego again, we will stay there.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds has RV parking. It is PARKING, not a resort, but full hook ups. Its been a while, but I think it was in the $30 area. It won't be available if there is racing or county fair activities. Its used for the vendors.

I frequently use Santee Lakes when I have business in El Cajon. Santee Lakes is a city owned park. Multiple sites are large enough to manage a 45' coach, toad and even trailer. Also it is not as tight as some of the other parks mentioned. This CG will put you out about 30 minutes from the base when it is not rush hour. I do travel with a large dog and it has never been an issue but my dogs bread is not considered aggressive and she only barks if you knock on the door.

It is best to call them about availability. Their online booking will ignore sites they have designated as monthly rentals if looking for less than a month (if a monthly site has less than a month between two monthly bookings they will rent the site for the shorter period of time to fill in the unreserved dates). Also weekends can be difficult (FRI/SAT nights) as locals tend to book up/lock up sites months in advance then cancel at last minute for full refund. I rarely have problems with finding a site for Sun~Thu. Trying to add a Fri or Sat and it can get difficult.
