Sealant / Skylight replace question

When replacing a skylight or rooftop component do we need to clean off all the old Grey factor sealant and then put new sealant/caulk on? Or will the new sealant/caulk stick to the old?

We have gotten two stories.... one of old sealant left and new sealant on top of the old.

Other story ...must clean off all old sealant first and then put on new.

Which is correct?

I have replaced 2 skylights, and added new vent covers, etc... I have always removed as much of the old sealant as possible to give me a level spot to place the new ones in. Then make sure to use a self-leveling sealant such as Dicor.

I would clean off the old, as best you can, and you know it will be a bear..........
Just take your time, and pick a bit off at a time. The more the better.
You need a clean flat surface to mount the new one on to.
Will you be using screws ? If so, make sure they are stainless.

I don't want to muddy the waters here however, please ensure that you're using the right sealant.

I heard that Entegra switched from dicor to silicone within the last few years, but don't know for sure on which coaches.

I called Entegra just this week for my Qwest. Still dicor on the 2020 models.

Just throwing it out there..

If they used the proper Surebond SB140 skylight sealant (which it looks like it may well be), it actually lifts off quite easily.

Thank you... yes correct sealant also a question....

We have a 2018 Anthem so please others correct us but I believe only NuFlex 311 used?

And does anyone know if the new sealant can just be put over the factory old as our repair has been done?

Thank you!!!

Yes Nuflex 311 is the correct sealant for your coach.
Sometimes the name changes, I just bought some at camping world and it was called "Heng's Silicone self leveling sealant"
And yes, you can fill in cracks over the old sealant.
