Bruce, on the 14 and newer awnings, the rubber water sweep is bolted on. It comes off pretty easy. I don't think the Eternabond will work with the silicone based 311 sealant.

Bolted on what? the canister? . The only bolts I see are those which hold the canister to the bracket

It's been too many years now to remember exactly where they were. But I do remember it wasn't that hard. Seems they were at the top of the sweep bolted to the canister. Found a photo of the 14, they were screwed at the top of the canister.

Well that's very different (ala SNL).

I thought you were referring to our 21's. Did you eternabond tape on your 21?

No, the last one was the 14. The 21 has the silicone sealant that Eternabond probably will not stick to. With indoor storage, I doubt I will ever have a problem with the 311 sealant.

Ok, now I understand. This still leaves the sealant under the awning as a difficult area to reseal. I don't relish the idea of removing and reapplying any of it.

As for the OP question, any loose or peeling sealer should be removed lots of opinions on what to clean it with. I personally like 85% or higher denatured alcohol. It leaves nothing behind. In theory lacquer thinner should too.

The best test on whatever you use is to put a little on a similar clean surface, let it dry, and see what kind of residue is left behind.

I check mine for loose or peeling sealant, mark those spot and the pressure wash the head out of it, staying away from any loose areas (as to not cause a leak) let it dry 24 hours in the sun and then reseal anything that looks problematic. I als reseal the seam where the roof coves meet the sidewalls every year. On a fiberglass roof that is typically the most problematic.

The eternal bond tape makes sense with some dicor for back up. I don’t think I’d want to remove the factory sealant though. Appreciate the info everyone!

Ggrant, in your post you never stated "why" you wish to re-do your sealant on the caps and I think this is a critical question you need to answer to yourself. If you are only doing this because of discoloration in your factory sealant and it is otherwise in good shape - that is one thing. However, if your factory sealant is cracking and breaking apart, this is a different story. I think you received some good advice concerning your options here, however, you need to decide for yourself whether you wish to correct a problem permanently, or hide a problem which could re-appear later. Obviously, every situation is different. But good luck with whatever you decide.
