Yes, you will need a large impact wrench or a pit. There is not enough leverage lying under the coach, even jacked up, to get a cheater bar to break the nuts loose. With an impact wrench, it's a piece of cake.

Although I understand Chuck's concerns, I have seen shocks switched out in the middle of the Quartzsite Gathering over Arizona volcanic rock and sand by two guys. It can be done with no special tools, but a pit would make it easier,

Are you installing Konis?

If so would you please share where you’re getting them from and the part number. I have a 2017 Anthem and will be looking to replace the shocks also. Thanks a bunch.

But don't take my word for it, here are what others have said and their experiences.

I paid a local truck shop $90 bucks to throw them on my Anthem. took them less than 30 min .. I was going to do them myself but it was 105 during the summer south texas .. i am like no thanks lol..

I called Brazel’s Rv Performance and they will ask for your VIN and check with SPARTAN on what KONI works for your rig ..

This is what i got back from them on my request for my 2014 Anthem

Spartan said 99B-3234 for front shocks, they weren't able to confirm the rears, but most likely 8805-1009 which may need adapter bushings in the lower shock eyelet , p.n.
3/4-5/8-BUSH

Please Note:
Some Spartan front IFS systems use a lower shock mounting bracket that is not compatible with the Koni mount. When replacing Bilstein part# BE5-6199-H0, BE5-6199-H1 or 24-061999 you may need this kit.
If your lower mount uses a "pin" instead of a bolt in the lower shock mount you will need to order x2 of part # APK-10000

Replaced all my shocks with Konis made a huge difference, then put on wheel balancers made even better. Highly recommend.

I had Koni shocks put on my 17.
They helped. Especially with the porpoising.

The install was inexpensive. And easy call for me to have the job done.
I don’t mind working on my coach and troubleshooting it.

But that job looked like it would be ruff and I think it cost about 150 bucks when I was having some other work done.

Chuck,

I can corroborate that story, I was right next to that coach at Quartzsite. They did not need my impact gun as they had their own but they borrowed my wrench and socket which was 28 or 29mm.

BINGO!!. Laying on concrete two of us could not do it without the impact wrench. Unless they dug a 4 ft hole in the sand for a cheater bar, I don't know how anyone could get enough leverage without an impact wrench. Even laying in the sand, it's a piece of cake with an impact wrench.

If you are going to do them yourself, have a plan B. Unless you are good at wrenching and have a good collection of tools. Most of the time shocks are straight forward. But every once in a awhile you get the bear.

What kind of impact wrench do you recommend? Air driven or battery powered. There are several battery driven impact wrenches with a breakaway rating of 1200ft/lbs plus. I am thinking that should be plenty🤔. Just curious what y’all are using.

Thanks, Tor

Tor,

Not sure the rating of the impact gun the guys were using but it was battery operated. I have the 3/4” one from Harbor Freight rated for 1400 ft lbs. which will do the wheel nuts as well.
