Thanks for the follow up! I was one that was deeply on the side for getting a new one. Perhaps the scale of the photo made it look more serious than it really was.
I think the voracity of some posts, like mine, are born out of an abundant caution for tire and suspension systems and the direct impact the can have on our safety. The collateral damage of a shredding tire also comes into play.
Since I am wired the way I am...I would have probably gotten a new tire. That is just me.
Never the less...you did the most important thing and got a professional opinion. If you see more signs that the damage is spreading you still have the option to replace the tire and I bet you keep a close eye on it.
