Slide out repair question

Recently went to extend a the P/S rear slide and got a loud bang when the slide was about 90% out. Pretty sure I have broken on of the shear pins in the extension mechanism. I have replaced several pins in the bed extension, which is a simple issue. After getting on the phone with Entegra, this one look a bit trickier.

It involves lowering the rear jacks an lifting the rear of the coach as high as possible without lifting the rear wheels off the ground. There, apparently, are two removable panels above the drive wheel that must be removed to access the mechanism. At that point, you are supposed to be able to access the shear pins and replace them.

My question is, has anyone done this project? The biggest problem I see is working around the tires. Looks like a dirty job if you don't remove a wheel (NOT HAPPENING!) I am out of warranty and don't really mind doing it if it is not too difficult. Observations welcome. Obviously, different floor plans have different locations. Mine is a 45K so the panels are over the front and rear edge of the outer dualie.

There was a post regarding changing that slide motor. They removed the wheel skirt it's about 6 screws. I have been in that motor compartment, it is doable but dirty. I slid in from the back side. Next time I think I would remove the skirt.

Found the post it was 3 bolts

If you expand the picture you will see where the OP circled the screws holding the fender on.

Chuck, there seem to be 5 fasteners. One in the center, two at the top, and two at the bottom corners.

Great idea for access.

shear pins

I'm getting a little nervous with all this talk about slide shear pins.
I think maybe I need to have some in stock. Can anyone tell me where to find them?
Thanks,
Carl

You can do this. Especially if you are out of warranty (as am I).

I replaced the passenger side front. The clevis pin did not break, the cog shaft broke. That was sort of a bear to extricate & fix, CS sent me the parts. I was under warranty.

If yours turns out to be a simple clevis pin, count your blessings.

I did subsequently access all of my motors and re-torque their mounting. As I recall, there was only a single access panel to remove for my PS rear slide. Removing the fender skirt is not a bad idea, I didn't do it. I think I may have posted some pictures of accessing the rear motor.

Changing shear pins is actually pretty easy for 3 out of 4 of the slides. The bed being the easiest one. Unfortunately, the one that failed this time is the hardest to get at. I keep 3 or 4 in my tool kit. Cheap insurance. Ace, Home Depot, Lowes

How did you do on changing the pins out? Any idea why they sheared in the first place?

Those are not shear pins, they are stainless steel clevis pins? Shear pins are made with softer metal so they break and prevent damage to gears/motors/etc when something binds.

At least that's what they do in equipment like rotor tillers or snow throwers. Replacing a shear pin with a steel pin in that equipment creates a risk to cause serious damage and is not recommended.

If the pins in the slides are shear pins then I suspect they need to be replaced with the same.

Probably from holding the extend or retract button a tad too long.
