Slide Topper - Driver Side, Front

The slide topper on our 44W, driver side, stops rolling into it's case about 8 inches before the slide is fully retracted.

Has anyone here suffered that malady?

You might want to open the case up and make sure its not packed full of leaves and pine needles.

Before I get on the ladder, I should ask how the case is removed. I see no screws from the ground level.
Do the end caps “pop” off?

FYI, the end caps secure the spring for the topper.

Be absolutely certain you’re removing the correct fasteners.

I did the clean out on our Phaeton for years without issues. The first time I did it on the Aspire, I didn’t review the instructions, went from memory, and almost lost a finger as the spring unwound with the cap spinning. The machines edges of the aluminum end cap cut the heck out of my hand.

I’m also lucky to have remained on the ladder.

I would suggest reviewing the article instructions for your topper before you perform any work.

Also, the springs are wound using a ratchet in the end.

I hope this helps,

-Matt

Kenny... the instructions linked on the second thread of this post were a significant help to me when I had a slide topper that had come unwound: http://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/slid...ue-444512.html

Does that link to the manual work for you?
It doesn't take me anywhere.

Apologies.....browser hid that it actually downloaded the PDF......I have to reset my "settings" to open the PDF instead of downloading it directly.

Thanks !!

Thanks Matt..... your warning has me concerned. (I have a deficit....cannot walk and chew gum at the same time).

Reading the manual, it appears the end cap comes off with the two allen screws. Would I be correct in assuming that as long as I didn't remove the "C" clip on the torsion bar, I will be okay?
If I remove both end caps, will the case or cassette come off for cleaning ?

Thanks.

My 2017 has Carefree toppers. For some reason I thought the 2018 and up Aspires went to Girard but don't know.

In any case, if you have the same Carefree topper as the '17 Aspire, the topper model is Ascent. You can remove 1 screw from each end cap which allows the cleanout flap to hinge open downward. See the manual in the link below. Page 8, the "Shoulder Screw" is the one you want to remove which is the highest, outermost screw.

https://www.carefreeofcolorado.com/d...ion-Manual.pdf

Also on the longer slides there may be an additional spring clip in the middle that keeps the flap from sagging. I believe you slide the pin either right or left to release it.

Just FYI on one of my toppers when I went to hinge the flap downward after removing the second screw the entire flap fell off. Luckily it was the bedroom slide and I was able to hang onto it and there was no damage. It shouldn't happen but just be ready. I think the extrusions that interlock where it hinges weren't meshed correctly. I put it back together and it's been fine since.

Yes, this is exactly what we did. Then we drilled weep holes in to drain the water from now on. You’ll be amazed at the amount of junk in there.
