Don,
Here in the US they is a requirement that the end up fitter, body builder in this case Entegra certified that the finished product has meet all safety standards as far as axle loading and other issues.
I sure Canada has similar requirements. That may be the reason Spartan is saying that Entegra needs to install the proportioning valve since they are the one that produced the finished product. But I have found like you, neither one will do it.

Let us know how those weights turn. Thanks.

So, if I understand this, you need two 90 degree fittings with male 1/4 NPT and a push fitting. That would be part KV2L07-35S on the page you linked, right? Fourth one down on this chart?

I am so going to have to do this....

This sounds like a good idea, however I assume warranty on associate parts would be void? One item to watch for when reducing tag axle pressure is cupping of the rear tires. This will occur if the tag axle is too lightly loaded. I do not think 50psi will cause this to occur, but one might check periodically to prevent occurrence. Don’t ask me how I know, sad senior moment.

Who would be the governing body that requires the fitter to comply with safety standards as far as axle loading on a motor home ? I never heard of one or saw any ID or or posted sticker saying it complies with any safety standards. Im sure if it was posted there would have been many complaints logged against RV builders.

Great post Don. It will be interesting to see changes in axle loading weights.

So that’s why my front axle is so heavy

Following up on my previous email, I can’t insert the Excel spreadsheet here but can send it to anyone interested. It has the effect of increasing the tag pressure from 20# to 80# in 10# increments on each individual tire weight as well as the per axle load change. A short summary:

Pressure. Front. Duals. Tag
20#. 12,600. 20,900. 2,250
50#. 13,200. 16,800. 5,750
80#. 13,800. 12,850. 9,150

These detailed per wheel weights were generated by another member of the Monaco forum but closely parallel what I found on my 09 Camelot. I ended up running 45# for the tags, gave me the most controlled ride and just felt the best. Tire pressures were set accordingly.

I asked Spartan about this and I was told that changing the tag axle pressure would throw the driveshaft out of alignment and cause driveline problems.

Wow! Now I'm questioning this upgrade. On a side note, does anyone know if the HWH Active Air allows adjustment of the TAG air pressure? I know it has its own regulator and manifold. I'm having this installed in October. I'd call them, but they are closed on Saturdays.

Jim, the HWH Active Air System does allow the operator to adjust tag weight thru the display. And now that the mod is done on scales you can have HWH adjust the tag Wts allowing you to see the changes and dial it in before you leave.

I don’t think I will make the tag axle so light as to cause cupping but perhaps it would even out the scuffing from having so much weight on it while doing sharp turns.

John,

Good information, thanks. It is interesting where a few psi difference can make a significant change.

I have been told just the opposite that it would not affect driveline angles. It is the ride height on the drive axle that affects driveline angles.
