Spartan Check Engine code 5862, Cummins 4518

I posted this information over on the Cummins section of iRV2 but got virtually no helpful information from anyone. However, I got this code as described below and thought I would re-post the information on this forum as someone else might search the code and this information would help.

The final resolution was earlier today and will be described at the end...

This is the first post …….

Have not driven my 2015 Entegra Anthem for about 45 days. Coach is new with 2400 miles on it (1200 miles that I put on it after purchase). Going to Kerrville rally in 10 days and decided to take out for a joy ride to raise Cumming 450 engine temp up to spec (on Spartan MM chassis) and get everything freshly operational. On the way back, came to traffic light that had recently been red, then turned green and the cars were picking up speed as I approached. I got down to maybe 20-25 mph as the line started to move, and then hit the pedal to start to accelerate and Allison seemed to fail to downshift, or there was a major loss of power to the Cummins, as there was little power resulting from the throttle increase. A few seconds later, I noticed the "Check Engine" light illuminated on the dash. Power seemed to come back in a few seconds. At home a mile later, checked code with Spartan CS and coach showed a Spartan code SPN-5862 which the CS rep said was a Cummins code 4518. She said the code translated into something like "After treatment sensor voltage is above normal"

I have never had a check engine code on either my prior Monaco Dynasty or this new coach and have no idea what this may mean.

Does anyone out there know what this means or likely represents?

I searched the forum and found nothing returned in the search for either of those numbers so apologies in advance if this is a well understood problem or code.... I am new to this part of iRV2.

Here is the second post done yesterday….

Well, I know a little more about this issue after spending a morning at a Freightliner / Cummins dealer getting codes run. The Cummins 4518 and equivalent Spartan code 5862 deals with an inappropriate voltage sensed in the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system which monitors exhaust from the engine. The SCR along with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and DEF were part of Cummins 2010 introduced system to reduce particulate emission by 98 percent. Apparently, the ECM saw a voltage value which was out of range and threw the code. Freightliner has to remove the SCR module to see the specific part number and then 24 hours to order/receive the part, so "promises" I will be ready to pick up the coach in 3 days. Tech did not know (because I asked) if I could drive the coach anyway, whether the engine would eventually get to a forced shut-down situation. Probably similar to a "no DEF" situation

Resolution

Got a call from the Freightliner dealer today saying they had pulled the module, had a new one in stock, and had put it into the coach and it was ready to go (now I should make Kerrville on time). Entire cost of the diagnosis and repair was covered under warranty. Must have been a pretty simple repair, and now Cummins ISL-450 is "purring" again.

Gary, Thanks.
I have had this type of hesitation 3x with the same circumstances, but never noticed the check engine light. Does it stay on? Does it beep? How do you read the code?
Thanks!

The codes appear on your dash display, but first, the yellow check engine idiot light comes on. When that light illuminates, you can press the down arrow on your digital display and some right arrows and you will get to a display for "Warnings" and another display for "Fault codes". You press down arrow to see if there are any warnings, or the down arrow for codes, will show you if there are one or more codes in the system. If there is more than one code, as you press the down arrow, you will see a different code.

I could not clear the code and was told to find a Cummins certified repair facility, which in my case was a Freightliner truck sales/repair facility. My code does not trigger a beep or alarm. The code was cleared by the diagnostic specialist tech, and then they changed the module I discussed.

If your yellow engine dash icon lights up, you need to find a close safe place to stop and read the codes and then call Spartan customer service. Ignoring a fault code can lead to significant problems or an engine shut down.

Thanks Gary, I had the hesitation, but no warning lights. I'll check for codes when I'm at the coach tomorrow.

No one ever confirmed that the hesitation was what caused the code. I experienced the hesitation once previously on the way back from Texas but no problem then.

The Allison seemed like it should downshift, but just didn't. That might be a completely different issue. My guess was that there was a de-rating of the Cummins for 5 or 10 seconds and there was little power to force the downshift on the Allison. My Dynasty never did that with a 370 Cummins. This was very noticeable and will be something that I try to figure out separately.

Sounds like you were a victim of the 16 DEF moduals with one not taking to the rest. They are a royal pain according several I have talked with that have made more than one trip to Cummins. One of the visits was 3 days waiting for a DEF part to be shipped into MT. Can't say I am a big fan of the DEF system, too many parts to fail.

I was getting on interstate and on coming traffic required I push the throttle quicker than normal. I looked down and had an engine code. At next stop, reviewed code and found it to be related to "after treatment" which is DEF. I turned key off and completely on for 5 times and code cleared. Truck on!

Without starting engine, you simply turned ignition off and on five times?? That would be a significantly less onerous process than the one the Spartan tech gave me (run engine 5 minutes, off for 30 seconds, repeat 4 to 5 times).

Yep. Learned that from a Ford pick up truck issue. DEF is a pain in the ... system anyway so I'm not too concerned with that code. I knew in doing so that the DEF tank pressurize and then might repair the issue. Worked fine and all is well. Tommy

Gary,

FYI, from Mike O'Neil at Spartan, the check engine light by itself is not a reason for an immediate pull over. Continue driving and at the next rest area or fuel stop check the codes and relay these to Spartan.

Yep - found out today that when it gets bad enough it'll say "STOP ENGINE NOW!!" with red lights flashing.
