Spartan fault codes

I started a thread in February about fault code 1761 by itself coming up just days after having the DEF head changed. It would disappear after a few minutes and reappear sometimes during the day at engine start up; almost always during the first startup of the day. This went on for over 2500 miles and several months. The code would be accompanied by the engine light with a check in it.

Then when I picked up the coach from NIRVC in Dallas, they do not work on Cummins so I don't think it was anything they did, code 3226 also showed up with the engine light without the check in it; and it stayed on all the time. Now the 3226 code has something to do with the NOx sensor while the 1761 has to do with DEF levels. But after driving home with both, then traveling up to Charlotte, MI Spartan academy the 1761 stopped showing up except in the stored files. Spartan could do no more than read the codes and suggested I visit a Cummins shop for any help.

Drove home by way of Hilton Head Island, another 1600 miles and the 3226 code went away! But then the 1761 code came and went a couple of times By the time I got to Cummins in Jackson, MS (btw a very clean and efficient facility) neither fault code was showing except in the files.

Dropped the coach off, went to lunch, and the service manager had pulled the codes and written them down on a shop worksheet, very nice except...the codes were different! But the descriptions were the same, apparently Spartan uses their own set of code numbers different than Cummins; what is the logic in that?!? I digress.

So I asked what did he recommend I do? Answer, since the codes are not currently coming up, nothing. What if they reappear? Bring it in and we'll replace whatever is needed at the time. What if they reappear and disappear again? Again, nothing. Would Cummins cover the replacement costs if I chose to have it done anyway...no. Besides Spartan makes that decision. But Spartan sent me to you!?!

OK the guy was nice, didn't try to get rid of me, was patient and answered all my questions. I'm still left in a bit of a quandary though. The 3226 code, NOx sensor came up and then disappeared on the 2 hour drive home. So far the other code has not reappeared. We're about to go on a 5 week trip of about 2500 miles and nothing is resolved. But as I've read in this forum there are some of you who have driven on with no other issues. As will I...hopefully.

The NOx sensor will not shut me down and we've now driven over 4000 miles with the DEF level code coming and going; and I was told by Spartan that code alone would not derate me either. Fingers crossed we always stay optimistic

Gary, "sometimes" unplugging the DEF head will reset it and clear the 1761 code. Strange that code would appear after a DEF head change. Did Cummins update the ECM when they had it in the shop?

Good question. They cleared the fault codes but I didn't ask about updating the ECM. I'll check the receipt, maybe it's on there. The first thing Spartan had me do was unplug the DEF head for 30 minutes when the 1761 first appeared, no joy.

With ALL of the DEF head problems, there could have been some changes to the the Cummins ECM. Good heads up for others getting DEF heads changed to have the coach checked for updates. They have to hook the computer up anyway to clear the codes.

I had a text from TXBart the other day, he had his checked while the DEF head was being changed....14 updates were required.
