Spartan Surge Tank/Radiator Leak Issues

Decided to start a new thread on these issues/concerns.

Today I decided to look into the surge tank and see if I’ve got rust. I’m going to have a pressure test done next week and want ALL issues addressed. Yes, I’ve got rust.

I called Spartan to understand the process of what gets changed during the replacement of the radiator. Coolant either being changed/replaced OR capture and reused - this will be determine by the condition of the coolant. This is determined by the shop if replace or reuse.

I next asked about the surge tank. Told Spartan that there’s rust on the inside of the neck and how this was going to be handled. There appeared to be some dancing around the question, but I pushed the issue. I was told, by Spartan CS, that the shop can sand the rust out of the neck and then paint the inside of the neck. Can’t make this up!! NOT and option in my opinion.

I then explained that that didn’t sound like a viable option since the rust could fall into the tank while being sanded. My support guy got flustered and told me again that this would be handled at the discretion of the shop....

Spartan must think that people are stupid out there. How the heck can you make a comment about sanding the tank and painting it. There was NO mention of removing and sanding the tank. I was left speechless and was told that this was all they could do.....

Hi Paul, the big problem I have discovered here is there is not a coolant over flow bottle/tank installed......so when the coolant heats up and expands it just goes to the ground from the drain hose till a hot coolant level is established. Now if there are no leak's in the system, when the coolant cools, the level in your surge tank goes down to around the sight glass level, leaving half of the tank empty......allowing for rust to form it seems.....
My surge tank is completely full all the time and there is a level in the over flow bottle at all times that goes up and down from coolant expansion and contraction.......cold level/hot level.
So, I have asked before on here with not to many response's, why not add a expansion tank so the radiator cap drain/over flow hose goes into the tank.......so your surge tank will always be full and the level in the expansion tank is a lot more easier to look at and if you watch the cold/hot levels, you can quickly see when you are loosing any coolant at all.........
I am going to say, due to added cost is the only reason these Coach's don't have them when built..........?
Just a thought for you to ponder......
I just replaced mine last year as it was old and a couple of the mounting points broke off. Bought a exact replacement at RV Chasiss.com(Spartan)
https://www.rvchassisparts.com:8443/...is/runApp?id=5

No reason that I can come up with not to add one............
Same coolant system setup as most all auto's and even big trucks/semi's.........as most radiator's are not accessible today and all use a "Overflow" Tank.

My thoughts exactly. I’ve owned a number of cars and MHs over the years and I’ve never had this many radiator related issues at all.

The last time, that I can remember, doing a radiator over or even replacing one was back in the 80s. And I did that because I needed to pull the water pump. Radiator was taken out for room so I decide to replace it. Car had well over 100k on it but was still running well.

I’ll know more next week after the pressure test. At that point Spartan will be involved.

Spartan is sending a stainless Steel Tank to replace the rusting tank. Hunter Smith with Spartan is handling the replacement part.

Thanks for letting me know. I’ll make sure that I point out the tank during the pressure test.

Same here different Spartan Rep. However I was told none in stock but should be available in a couple of weeks.

I sent pictures looking into filler neck and Spartan confirmed it needed replacing.
