Speaking of DEF heads

There are currently 5 of these wood chippers sitting at Cummins Ft. Myers waiting for back ordered DEF heads. They are also made by Shaw for Cummins

So Chuck, I take it you're shooting down my plan to buy a wood chipper and tow it behind the motorhome so I can pull the DEF head out of the chipper's DEF tank when the one in the motorhome bites the dust...?

At least those are easy to change, 15 minutes tops. DEF tank is in the open with no cooling hoses, etc. Cummins bills 5 hours to change those. I can see why nothing is being done to correct the DEF heads problems........follow the money.

Yep, I noticed that. Definitely easier than our setup.

I'm guessing that dumpster on the right side of your photo is full of failed DEF heads...

:Good guess on the dumpster 😊 it was scrap metal, manifolds, etc. With air filter canisters piled up on the side. I go back tomorrow for the oil leak repair. I'll get more information on the current DEF heads and what is being replaced the most.

Had a long talk with the service manager at Cummins today. They see everything that have DEF sensor in for replacement, nothing more than others, but here is some interesting information. Lee County school board has a fleet of new Bluebird school buses that were going though DEF heads like crazy. Sometimes having to wait for replacements. A representative tried to purchase a supply of DEF heads from Shaw Development to have on hand. He came back to Cummins and said that compound was locked up tighter than Area 51. I guess Shaw is afraid someone will try to steal their trade secrets. I'll bet there has been more than one threat from an angry trucker in the area. Even the school board did not have any success with Shaw, now I don't feel so bad. Sure hope the NHTSA steps in soon.

Sounds like a good project for an intrepid reporter looking to become the next Woodward or Bernstein.

I heard none in the entire country, and no expected arrival date is known. Would that be accurate?

Larry, did Shaw every return your call or email and answer any questions?
I would be happy instead of a reporter, it would be an investigator with the NHTSA. It is long over due.

Is Shaw the only one that makes DEF Heads?
Why does not someone else make them? No demand? To hard? There has to be some reason.

I would bet that everyone would even pay more for one if it did not have the failure rate that we think that Shaw has.

Chuck, you might go and pay the school district a visit and tell them about the NHTSA. Sounds like they could file a really good complaint

Also find out who owns the wood chippers and get them to file a complaint.

Robert from Freightliner said they resolved the problem but he has not answered my question about where they get sensors.

Nope, not a peep.

Not even an auto-acknowledgment - you know, the ones that say something like...

The idea you had of me camping out at there location since I am so close, didn't work for the school board either. Looks like they are taking the money and hiding.
