SPN Errors
Just wondering if anyone has experienced thee types of errors and if so what did they find wrong.
Check Engine - ABS warning
No J1939 or Trans Communication
MID 178 Data Cnvrtr PID 118 FMI 1
Source 3 Trans
SPN 6597 FMI 9
Appears all this has to do with the Can Bus data not being sent or read.

Hey Rob,
So early in my ownership I would get the ABS warning. In my case it turned out after ignition on, I wasn't waiting long enuf for the ABS modulators to finish their self test before starting and that would sometimes generate the error code.
There are six sequential clicks after ign on. You are supposed to depress the brake pedal slightly during this time and wait for the exercise to complete. With the brake pedal partly depressed you should hear a short air burst as the modulator at each wheel is excercised. Ideally you also are supposed to wait until the MIL lamp goes out before starting.
See this document: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bzy...Rbkrqh7VaE1Alg
The others I don't have experience with, although I can tell you FMI 9 means "invalid update rate" and the code will register even if the expected data only glitches briefly.
Are these constant errors or occasional that clear after 3 ignition cycles?
If you haven't already, sign up for a free Cummins Quickserve account, it's specific to your VIN. Once setup you'll have access to some pretty in depth troubleshooting procedures. It may be out of date but the DEF simulator site has a post describing the Quickserve sign up procedure: https://defsimulator.wordpress.com/2...mmins-engines/

Hey Rob,
I had the ABS message once before, not sure why it did it as I always wait before starting and do the brake pedal routine.
This time got more messages that points to the data not being sent or received through the can bus. All of the dash went out except for the air gages, Jake brake is out. At Cummins now but their diagnostic machine won't even register when plugged in. They are still talking to Spartan but not looking good.

There is a thread on irv2 a while back about someone having a similar issue. If I remember correctly theirs was a come and go problem. I do not remember what the solution was.
By chance were you driving in rain when this happened, or shortly after driving in the rain?

Ugh.
Are they plugging into the J1939 under the dash? We have almost the exaxt same coach, so FWIW I have a black round 9 pin Deutsch connector on a bracket down to the left under the dash. This is the 256mbps network. If you poke around above that area you may find another green 9 pin Deutsch which is the 512mbps network. Also, there is another 9 pin Deutsch at the rear of the coach near or behind the Spartan service bay. I noticed it one time all wrapped up in a bundle of wires in the vicinity of the trailer hitch on the passenger side.
Hopefully it's just a bad connection. Any signs of rodent damage?
Good luck!

Hello Turbo, no the coach was in storage was getting ready to leave on a trip. Had taken it out 2 days before and field it up, no problems . I remember that thread, the J1939 connection at the back of the coach had gotten water in it, causing all kinds of problems . I had zipped tied mine up higher after reading that.

Morning Rob, they plugged into all of them without luck. come to find out the Cummins dealer here is no longer Spartan certified so they won't work on chassis issues. Talked with Spartan again and had to take the coach to another shop they recommend. ThThe guy at Cummins tried to tell me because of a Texas law they couldn't do both Cummins and Spartan . Spartan said it was because they lost their 2 Spartan trained techs and didn't send anyone to get trained.
By the way Rob, my wife ask me, did you break my bus with all the mods you and Rob have done LOL.

Haha! Hey don't blame me, eRVin doesn't touch the J1939! It must be those fancy newfangled remote controlled Alexa compatible black and gray tank dump valves you added!
Good luck!

Does the 512mbps have any information that the slower one doesn't?

I don't know if they are separate networks or just copies of each other.

Update to the problem. Originally Spartan thought the 14 pin connector, which resides on the passenger side of the frame just behind the tag axle, would be the issue. Normally water gets into this connector and shorts out the Can Bus. But, it turns out it was the connector at the rear of the bus, just to the right of the engine and below the diagnostic plug. Evidently water had gotten into this connector and shorted out a couple of pins. Since these connectors are critical for the engine, trans and dash to communicate, you would think Spartan would have put these connectors inside a water proof box to protect them. Oh well!

I think you just found reason #190 not to drive in heavy rain. That is the type of problems I use to have before I stopped driving in the rain. Glad it was found.

Chuck, I believe you are a lot like brake fluid. Very hydroscopic.

From Experience, Travel Supreme and Entegra built two of the worst boats I have ever owned. Not just my experience, but so many water intrusion posts, such as this one continue to come up. Steps and adaptive cruise control the most common. The expensive ones are ECM's and related out of warranty, don't ask me how I know.
