Status of Samsung icemaker class action
For those of us lucky enough to have a Samsung french-door refrigerator in our coaches, is anybody aware of the status of the class action suit regarding the icemakers in these refrigerators? My icemaker is currently frozen up solid for the third or fourth time and I still have some extended warranty remaining to cover this repair. But I've heard that the only replacement icemaker unit currently available from Samsung is no better than the original...it may be the same as the original!
The only info I can find about this suit seems to indicate that this has become a retirement package for class action lawyers...if we're lucky, we all may end up with a couple bags of ice from Samsung as a settlement.

As of 10/20/20 no updates. If it is anything like the Norcold class action, that took 13 years. Looks like this one is moving at the same speed.

Forgot to mention, on the Norcold refrigerator class action, after it took 13 years to settle, Norcold had four 4 years to pay the claims. Total settlement time, 17 years. I have a feeling Norcold outlived many of the class action participants. Thankfully I was young enough and saw it all the way to the end. My settlement was a 100% of the $750. out of pocket in repairs, but nothing for shop, travel time and expense.
Reading of the Samsung case this morning, it looks like it will follow the same path. Another item that should be added to the family trust or will.

I have one of these refrigerators in my home, and have had the same problem with the ice maker. I have been using a hair dryer to melt the ice block to get back to operating. A couple of weeks ago, I had to melt the ice again, and in frustration, I called the 1-800-SAMSUNG number listed on the tag inside the fridge. When the call was answered, I calmly let the lady know my problem, and she forwarded me to a service person. I calmly went through the problems with the fridge along with what I had been doing to keep it making ice and also told her I knew it was out of warranty and had spent $$$ for a service repair guys in the past. Is there anything SAMSUNG can do to help me out as we like the fridge it's just the ice maker that doesn't work. She got me scheduled with a SAMSUNG service tech who arrived about 1 week later. In 35 minutes he replaced the ice maker, a drain line, and an electronics board in the back of the fridge. All at no cost.
It is working like it should at this time. Time will tell.
Call Samsung and see if they can help.
Good luck.

Thanks for the note re: contacting Samsung for help with the icemaker issue. I had attempted to get some assistance from this same number a few months ago and struck out...nobody seemed to even be aware of the problem nor how to get it fixed. This time was different and it sounds like Samsung is going to schedule a tech to replace my unit with a new one at no charge...we'll see how this works out!
I have a few questions;
1. Did the tech who replaced your icemaker have to move the frig out to make some type of adjustment to, or replace, a water line?
2. Did you need to shut the frig off or was the repair made with the frig still running?
3. Does the replacement unit work any better than the old one?
Thanks for the info re: your experience...
Jim

The ice maker and drain hose were completed with the fridge still operating. He had to replace the electrical board which is located in the back of the fridge. The fridge was unplugged for that replacement. Total unplug time was around 10 minutes.
I wondered how the replacement would take place if the fridge was in an RV. There's bound to be a way. May have to be creative here.

Interesting. Must be a bigger issue than I would have guessed. I had a Samsung French Door refrig in my 2015 Anthem "B" and in 3 years of approximately being on the road 50% of all of that time, we NEVER experienced any problems with the icemaker in our coach....worked like a Clydesdale the whole three years. No problems at all.
Makes me think that there must be isolated cases of problems, or problems with certain manufacturing runs, but not a problem across the board on those units. Also, has not been a major issue discussed by us Samsung owners here on the forum to the best of my knowledge and memory.

Gary, we have had two different Samsung’s in two of our S&B’s. First one was bullet proof. Sold it with that house. Current one is on its third ice maker. Friend bought two identical fridges for their S&B - one is great, the other is on the second ice maker. Really think it’s luck of the draw. I think Samsung might have a couple of vendors supplying those ice makers.

I just replaced the icemaker in my samsung refrigerator in my 2017 44B coach because the ice maker freezing up. After a week no more issue.
After removing the old one I think the issue was it was not seated correctly in the back but replaced it anyway. Easy enough job.

Just had my Samsung icemaker repaired last week for the 4th time. It was repaired two time under warranty and 2 times out of warranty. But in my case Samsung did the repair at no cost to me. Samsung will not remove the refrigerator from the slide which can be a big deal. The icemaker repair consist of a new main control board located on the exterior rear wall, auger assembly, ice bucket, and ice tray assembly. The technician also must seal the edges of the interior ice compartment and check the adjustment of the water lines. If the line are too far in or out it can create a potential problem. The technician that did the most recent repair came out of San Antonio, TX and was very knowledgeable with the Samsung ice-maker issue. He told me if this repair does not work there was a good chance Samsung would do a buy back or replacement.
The ice maker repair kit parts are upgrades from the original parts. For example they added a heater to the water inlet line. The main board has several modifications so it interfaces better with the ice maker. What I found to be a big contributor to freeze up is a defective fan on the back of the auger assembly. This fan play an important role in circulating the air so if it fails ice will start to form. You can not just buy the fan from Samsung because it is part of the auger assembly. However, for the DIY you might find a 3 wire 12 volt computer fan which might work.
There is no good answer for the Samsung ice maker issue other than total refrigerator replacement.

Our 2015 Cornerstone apparently has a finnicky ice maker also. It eventually freezes up and is almost impossible to remove. Ice builds up in a sheet below the ice bucket and the bottom back on the auger and air vents. Is that the typical set of symptoms most have had?
