Stay off I-10 West

We are traveling from Florida to Phoenix with some stops along the way to see friends. We had to take I-10 and that was a mistake. The interstate from Louisiana thru Texas is nothing by Construction with some spaces of 2 lane unimproved Highway. We traveled this same corridor in 2016, but going east to Florida from Phoenix. Nothing has gotten better, as a matter of fact it seems worse to me. I don't think the TDOT will ever finish this interstate. We are in San Antonio, Texas now, but expecting more of the same as we continue west.

If coming back through Texas, I-20 was a good drive from the I-10/I-20 split to the DFW area - we drove that 2 weeks ago, if that route is not too far out of your way. We drove to DFW from Indio on I-10 to the split, and it was not bad - hopefully you are almost past the bad part of I-20

I45 goes from Dallas through Houston and ends in Galveston

There has not been a time since it was first build that some part has not been under construction. There was a part in North Houston that when they got finish with a section they tore it back up and rebuilt it again.

IMO- may not so honest of an opinion:

A state highway engineer's dream would be to have orange barrels every mile along their Interstate highways.... Maybe they have a contest between states.

The Oklahoma department of transportation has so many orange barrels that they had to resort to storing them on the hi-ways😎

Construction season is just starting to heat up. We traveled down Hwy 101 from Astoria OR to Los Angeles and suffered several lane closures and had to wait for pilot cars. In one spot we got stuck in a 2 hour road closure. Driving past the construction area sure made me "pucker".

Thank you for the current update Bill. Beaumont TX has been under construction on I-10 for 34 years that I am aware of. Every time I see a report, it is worse than the last one. I had heard the Lake Charles was still the same washboard as it was 34 years ago also. We will take I-40 on our trip to Vegas soon. Thanks for confirming which route to take.

If the roads never got fixed everyone would complain that they were terrible. When they fix them people complain about the construction. You can't have you cake and eat it too folks. Road construction is a necessary evil. without it we'd be complaining about getting stuck on the dirt roads.

On our recent trip to NM/AZ from central FL we took the roads less travelled.

We went over to US19, up to US84 via some two lane highways to LA28 to I-49 to LA6 to TX 103 and 7 to US84 to US180.

Did it take longer? yup. The route pretty much avoids all metroplexes and is quite pleasant. Parking lot docking opportunities abound.

Avoiding I10 TX-LA Border Area

Came east from NM 3 weeks ago, really bad road east of Houston. VERY narrow lanes through about 10 miles of construction. Was bad even in our car.

Heading back with MH/Toad I will NOT go that route. Up I49 to I20 then west. Would rather deal with DFW traffic than that I10 mess....

if you are in san antonio, you may have gotten past the bad part. I think I-10 after about Boerne is probably pretty clear and the speed limit is 80 I think.

I might suggest you even take Hwy 415 once you cross the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge north to Hwy 190, then Hwy 190 west to I-49 at Opelousas.

I haven't driven I-49 since March of last year, but there was a bit of construction north of Alexandria if my memory was correct, and then just south of Shreveport. In Shreveport, if you take Hwy 3132 around town to avoid the I-49 & I-20 interchange, be aware. You will feel like you are on a roller coaster between I-49 and Mansfield Highway. It has been that way since they built in back in the 80s.

Note that fuel stops on I-49 may be a bit limited. Try to fuel up outside of Alexandria or Natchitoches. The stations on south side, I-49, of Shreveport do not have easy access for RVs and trailers, but west of Shreveport on I-20 should be better.

I haven't driven the section of I-20 between the exit for Hwy 415 and Lafayette in years. Ignoring construction woes, it used to be on the list of most deadly sections of highway because of the amount of fog they saw while driving over the swamps. (How can you expect to build a decent road when there is nothing but swamp underneath you?)

that's why we take 6 from waco to 290. if going on to Galveston we get off at Hempstead and jog down to I-10 and then take 99 around. less construction /wrecks
