Steer Valve Stems

Has anyone else been having issues with steer valve stemís leaking? This is the 2nd valve stem in 4 months on the same wheel that Iím in the process of having replaced. We have Centramatics installed if that matters.

Another rantÖTAís tire shops wonít work on Motorhomes with 1 piece windshields and send you down the road. Not to mention that this same TA has done 2 of the valve stemís in the past.

Rant overÖbut am concerned on the valve stem issue. Good thing the TPMS letís us know if a slow leak in enough time to get to a shop.

RV Wonders,

That is odd two valve stems in that time.
Those valve stems usually last for many years. Some will replace when installing new tires.
Are they telling you where they failed?
I would question the mating service on the wheel with the stem.
I donít think your wheel balances would be the problem as they are on the inside of the wheel and stem on the outsideÖÖstrange.

I guess TA must of popped a single piece window shield out somewhere.

You didnít say where the leaks occur, but If you donít have a valve stem tool, get one.
I was changing batteries in my TPMS and one of the stem valves was not tight, allowing air to escape. I also carry a handful of valve stem replacements. They screw in.
Tool is readily available at any auto parts store near you.
If they are leaking at the base where it mates to the wheel, maybe there was/is a slit or crack in the rubber.

Leaks were from the base. So have to remove the wheel, un-mount the tire and replace. Maybe a cut in the o-ring, but 2 in 6 months? Either way back on the road after 5hrs at Speedco in Brunswick, GA. Also took off the Centramatics to see if maybe they were rubbing on the valve stem causing an issue.

I guess when the tire is dismounted you will know.
Sorry it was not simpler for you.
Would be curious as to what you find.

Check the valve caps before you do anything else. If the stems on your valves are longer than norm, there are caps on the market that could actually make contact with them and create leakage.

The caps are the TireMinder TPMS which weíve used on this coach for 3 years so donít believe that is the issue.

In 2 coaches each ~ 3.5 years, never had a valve stem failure or leak. I'd wonder about the thread and hole drilled in your wheel and if you might have a burr or bad thread.

RVW, did you perform a bubble test in the stem tube and around the valve base?
If all that is satisfactory then I can't imagine there is any thing wrong with the valves.

Both of my tag tires have a slow leak, and have for a long time. Over 30 days, they will lose about 10-12 lbs. I just watch them and air up as needing before moving. I have not tested for leaks around the tire monitor/stem area, but suspect it is the tire monitoring system. Had one break, and was without it on that tire for a while, and that tire did not lose pressure. So, either the stem, or the tire monitor combination is creating a very slow leak on mine.

Gary could be right. A small burr or defect might not allow the stem to be seated properly.
Had a slow leak on our Jeep.
Checked TPMS, rotated to opposite tires, checked valve stems, etc. After I was satisfied it was not me, it had to be the tire.
Went to our tire dealer. After submersing the wheel and tire, a small bubble appeared on the tire. Nothing obvious visually, nor could be heard. Tires were nearing their end of life but probably had another good 10k left.
Would not rule the tires out in your search.
