Surge Suppressor

What type of units has anybody been using to protect their coaches? Are they hard wired or are the portable ones better. Also would a Hughes Auto Transformer do any good for protection

Also use the Progressive. Even use it parked in the garage. RV is plugged into it all winter.

Progressive is the way to go. No regrets. Fits in the bay just fine.

Cable

I have purchased the Surge protector, but am having a tough time finding the section of power cord to wire it in. I was hoping to just get 2' of 50 amp cord. Anyone have a suggestion?

I bought mine at Home Depot. They have 4 conductor 6 gauge wire on spools, and will sell any length you want. I bought 3 feet; they cut it a little long and it was barely enough. About $6 a foot.

I bought this kit to install mine

I made it into a portable so it could be removed easily for repair.

I purchased it from Tweetys.com but it is available from others.

It's true that you need a better surge protector with decent low/high voltage protection. I've had the Progressive on my last two coaches and they are the best.

I chose to go a different route this time. I replaced the existing TRC 41260 transfer switch with a 40250-RVC transfer switch. It's a more robust transfer switch plus has surge and voltage protection equal to the Progressive. I chose this method for three reasons. One, I preferred replacing the transfer switch, which isn't known for being bullet proof with the better switch that had 60 amp shock mounted contactors versus 50 amp rigid mounted contactors. Two, I didn't want to add another component to an already full compartment so replacing the existing switch didn't take any extra room. Three, it has RVC network capability and I plan to expand that into a total coach control system upgrade a bit later.

However, for anyone just looking for a good add-on protector, the EMS 50C-HW is as good as they get and the company that backs it is excellent.
