Texas Registration for Coaches purchased out of state

I purchased my Aspire in Georgia last month and went today to pay for registration and license fees. Learned a couple of things:

1. The temporary tag from Georgia was good for over a month, so I planned on registering in Texas sometime before it expired. If you wait more than 30 days from purchase to register in Texas, there is a Penalty of $750.00. This is true even you do not come back to Texas before the expiration of 30 days.

2. I was charged a diesel fee of 1% of the net purchase price. In Texas RV’s are exempt from this fee. I looked it up and was able to have that fee removed.

So, don’t delay the registration and don’t let them charge the diesel tax.

Sounds like there trying to get the fees sooner then later and this late fee gets people in to pay more sooner then later...

As for the diesel fee that’s the first I have ever heard that one...

But I am not surprised...

I found bringing a coach purchase out-of-state to be a huge hassle. Did they require you to provide a weigh ticket also?

Glad you posted this. I am in FL, I am going to our DMV to see what needs to be done if I do not return within the 45 day temp tag from NIRVC. We plan on leaving for the summer from Atlanta.

No, they did require the certificate of origin that had the weights listed. The tax was expensive, but in Texas after paying the sales tax , there are no property taxes on motor coaches going forward.

Chuck,
If memory serves, FL and GA have reciprocity agreements. Double check with NIRV but they should be able to transfer your current tags to the new coach and submit the appropriate paperwork to FL.

Wow, had me quickly going back to the registration paperwork for our coach purchased January last year. I guess I was lucky and the clerk prepared it correctly and did not charge the 1% diesel fee. Also looks like we were within a few days of the 30 days as there was no penalty. If it was there, I think I would have attempted to go after Lazydays in Tampa for taking so long getting the initial fixes done. Not a good experience there.

We could start a post about that but the forum would probably run out of bandwidth
If others make the mistake of purchasing at LD, be very careful, they took over 6 weeks to get my title work to me. Thankfully the FL DMV was easy to work with.

Duane, I had to provide a weight sheet for the coach. No 1% for us, but it took a very long time to get our tags due in part to the fact that Dixie flooded the week after we bought.

I think our latest tag fees were around $300. As stated previously, no personal property taxes in Texas.

The only inexpensive part of this thing.

Would you please direct me to the location where it states RV's are exempt from the 1% fee in Texas. Recently we purchased an RV out of state, and had to pay the 1% fee. If I can prove that RV's are exempt, then I can receive a refund. After reading your posting, I tried to look up the exemption, but have not yet been successful in finding it.

Thanks for your help.

I found both of these on Google exempting the fee for TX, and how to file for the refund. Google is a wonderful tool.

Actually Chuck is a great search engine. He should be listed right under Google, so when google fails us, as it sometimes does, just click on "Brobox search ".

Brobox,
Do you have any idea (approximate) what the annual tag/registration fees will be in FL on your new Cornerstone? Curious as we may be relocating to FL...later this year.

Thanks!

Quinton
