The value of a prefilter.

The first photo is the filter before the water softener.

The prefilter after one month on the road, the left is the old filter vs the new on the right. None of our water has been from below average campgrounds.

I am a firm believer of filters, the more the better.

X2 - I have a double filter just before entering my softener - headed out on Friday, and I will check the filters. One of my filter housing is clear, and it did not look too dirty from our 2 week trip. I did a backwash on the softener and the salt recharge, then blew the water our of the tank. I remember seeing your post about storing and re-connecting the softener, and the "yuck" water from storage. Mine has been stored, dry, out of the coach, recharged - should I just rinse it for a few minutes prior to putting it back in the coach?

Yes, just rinse it before putting into use.

Can I ask, what is the brand/model of the filter you use? I like the idea...

Chuck, have you ever used the Blue inline filters? I wonder how much junk they filter out. I change my blue filter every three months. The Entegra built-in filter in the baggage compartment doesn't show much when I change it every three months.

I have not installed (fixed instalation ) my water softener and pre filter on our cornerstone(as I did on the tiffin) I am trying to decide between a reverse osmosis system or staying with the softener.Any feed back? The cost will be close to the same(if I buy another softner(stainless brand) that will mount horizontaly and not have to be removed to recharge.)

The filter housing is a GE Smartwater at Home Depot for $13. The cartridges are Walmart, 2 for about $6. All the prefilters do is catch the big chunks before they get to the softener. As the photo shows they do work.

Personally, I am not a big fan of the blue filters, I cannnot see the condition of the filter. I saw the rust in this one as I was pouring the water out to put it away. Two filters for 6 bucks is pretty cheap to change them more often if needed. The blue filters do work but there are better options

I would go RO if I was sure I was going to keep the MH

My pre-filter on the softener (last winter in Arizona) looked the same as yours Chuck, rather disgusting.

Are these the "blue filters" you're referring to?

Yes that is the filter. I keep several on hand just in case one gets clogged up.

Plus I have a in-house filter located in the baggage compartment.

Since we plan on FT'ing and purchasing a new coach our plan is to do both. I want good clean unaffected water while on the road and I believe that the RO and softener, as well as prefilter, will provide what we want. Each component, softener and RO, will provide different filtering characteristics, but put them together and I think you'll have good clean water.
