That's my suspicion. No one would admit to it, of course. CS is checking on a) availability or b) part numbers so I can get my own. Anyone have a link to the correct window motor on Amazon?

CS is sending me a new motor, to arrive Thursday. Since I am leaving for Quartzsite on Friday AM, I don't know if I'll be able to get it installed. Might be a little project for the owner group. <g>

Or, another possibility is that the gears failed because of the lack of lubrication.
99% of these step problems are lubrication, or lack of, related. It's the nature of the beast given the conditions these steps operate in. They need regular lubrication. Humid climates more than others.
One of the best spray lubes I've used is Boshield T9. It does not wash off or evaporate like most (WD40 is the worst) of these sprays. I use it on steps, hinges, locks etc etc. Great stuff.

If the motor arrives early enough on Thursday, it is a plug and play change. 3 screws and a power plug, plus the ground wire to change it. Doesn't hurt to put a little grease on the gears if they are dry, but all of the motors I have changed had plenty of grease on the gears.

Sorry, my comment on lubrication was directed toward the step mechanism and not necessarily the gears.
Excess friction due to binding mechanism will cause premature failure of the plastic gears in the same way as applying pressure on the steps before they fully extend.

Here is the bible from Lippert. And, if the gear is bad,
you can buy new motors with a metal gear instead
of plastic. It is only a few $$ more.

I totally agree. Lack of step lube is probably the biggest cause of step failure. I carry a can of motorcycle chain lube and spray mine frequently. If we have driven through any rain, the steps get sprayed, wash the coach, spray the steps. It takes less than a minute and prevents a lot of problems later on.

If you do not get it installed prior to leaving I would be happy to give you a hand in Quartzsite.

Says steps are equipped with self-lubricating bushings, no lubrication necessary?

Those steps in the PDF are a little different. Our step motor slips into a gear box that are plastic gears. They are greased. When I changed the motor on my 12 year old TS the grease was like new. Pushed some of it back into the teeth and closed it up.

I think the motor doesn't have a plug. I believe it will need a couple of butt connectors, or better yet some solder and heat shrink.
Might be different on different step models, years etc.

A word of caution when installing the new motor on the steps. The bolts under there are not heavy duty grade. DON'T think about tightening them too much or they will snap off causing some language not suited for young ears.
Yes, I did experience such an event! Should this unfortunate event take place.....with enough Jack Danials, and a few band-aids, you can replace all of those wimpy bolts with some worthy fasteners by carefully lowering the whole step platform and laying it on your chest while trying to grow skinnier fingers. An ice pack is recommended for your neck the next day.

How correct you are, the ground screw is the softest metal I have even seen. It now has a SS tek screw in it's place. I would replace all the soft screws if changing the motor.

We're camped out in the desert at Quartzsite and tomorrow it'll be a group project. 757driver is helping me diagnose and fix this thing.
