It's six hours. Also, the 2nd version of the 2018 MKX owner's manual says 70 mph max versus 65 mph in the first version of the manual. Lincoln says to follow the printed manual that came with your vehicle.

"If you are in one of the latter categories, has there ever been any issues caused by "breaking the rules" on speed?"

Probably more important for some is to run the engine several minutes before towing and periodically throughout the day. I thought it was to recharge the battery but that was wrong, it was to lube the transmission. Ended up with new (rebuilt) transmission this summer on road. 37, 000 miles--just out of warranty. Experienced shop owner told me the inside of the transmission was almost welded together.

I suggest you read your manual. (BTW Stew we have an Explorer)

Pretty well the same as all others have posted. I usually set my cruise at 68mph on a good interstate. Will go faster to pass and also downhill, but only for short periods of time. I try never to go over 75.

If big brother is listening and I have transmission problems, I never exceed the recommended speed! And no, that wasn’t me that passed you today!

15k miles towing a RAM crew cab 1500 4x4. No restrictions on speed from dodge and I drive the speed limit 65-75 by state. No problems!! That includes the motorcycle in the truck bed too.

Chevy manual said not to exceed 65. I would every now and then but not for long. Didn’t like driving faster than that anyhow. Now with my Wrangler don’t have the limit but still drive 65 or less.

Pulled a 2011 chevy HHR Auto trans, for 5 years 45,000 miles at 75 mph and it was limited to 65 mph, never a issue with that car.

I have been pulling my 2010 Ranger 2X4 since new at around 60 mph. Once in a while I creep up to 70, or 80 on a long down hill, but not for too long.
Ford manual says not to exceed 55 mph.
Never had a problem yet.
I suspect it's like others have said, a CYA inserted in the manual for Ford's protection.
Happy Glamping.

I would love to go back to an F-150 but I just don't want that large of a truck for my every day driver. Right now we are leaning mostly toward the new Blazer. I soured on another Lincoln when I found out that on a trade my two year old MKX was worth less than half of its MSRP. OUCH!

Toad Speed Limit Question

We had a 2014 Lincoln MKX. I contacted a Ford (MKX is same driveline as Escape) when vehicle was purchased and was told 65 MPH is the speed Ford tested flat towing at. I watched some vids and spoke to folks in large RV’s that have had front blowouts and then found myself rarely exceeding 65. Blowouts are a hand full so I kept my speed a bit slower than a passenger vehicle. Tommy

The big white sign sez 70.
The speedo sez 116 (in a gen 3 Prius)
I'll let y'all know how the gen 4 engine works out......

Oh, y'all talking about being towed. As fast as the Quantum will pull it..

I ran 68-69 for 350-400 miles of day 2 of trip back from Arizona and my Honda CR-V had a clear and distinctive smell of hot oil or transmission fluid after 8.5 hours of towing the Honda through NM and West Texas. That is faster than the manual recommends, but the Cornerstone likes the faster speed better than my old 62 mph ISL-450.

So, the final ~400-450 mile leg home, I ran the Honda engine for ~20 min as we ate lunch at a rest stop and smelled nothing "hot" when we got home.

That is going to be my new standard operating procedure.... run Honda engine 10-15 minutes while we eat lunch every day we are on the road (e.g. every ~ 4 hours of travel).

Gary
