Toll Pass recommendations
This summer we will spend 6 months on the road and will either be staying in and/or driving through the following states: IN, OH, PA, NY, MA, CT, RI, VT, NH, ME, MI. I've been researching toll tags such as EZ Pass, SunPass Pro and Uni-Pass. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? Also, if you have used any of these, do you place the transponder on the coach only, or do you place a separate one on your toad vehicle? I assume the toll booth would read the extra axels of the toad, but I don't want to pay double tolls if I put a separate unit on the toad. Thanks as always for your expert advice--

In the Northeast EZ-Pass is the primary pass of choice. It should be set up to handle your coach and towed. Do not have a pass in towed car while towing it. The toll plazas seem to always get it right towing or not. The high-speed drive by sometimes miss the towed vehicle. Mine is mounted inside top center of the windshield.

Like Dennis said, keep the tow vehicle pass hidden while towing and hope for the best. When they take pictures is when they (now AI) catches the extra axles and bills appropriately.

You can obtain an EZ Pass from just about any of the states but I found Ohio easiest to work with. Just set up an account and they will send you a transponder. Once you're through with the trip just return it for a refund of any unused funds. I've done this twice for trips in the Northeast.

I have the Sunpass Pro. You definitely do not want one in your toad, as you'll be charged twice. I recommend keeping the electrostatic bag for storage of your toad's transponder.
Besides FL, the Sunpass Pro has worked for me through the express lanes near Charlotte, the WV turnpike, the OH turnpike, and toll roads in IL near Chicago. I've not tried one in Dallas yet.

Started with I-Pass years ago because we lived in their service area. Both EZ-Pass and I-Pass merged service a few years ago. Pretty much covers Midwest and NE needs. Added Sun Pass but have yet found ourselves drifting that way. Texas has their own system and they will find you. Colorado is expensive.

I have the Kansas K-Tag because it is interoperable with Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado where I do most of my toll road driving. The K-Tag transponder is a windshield sticker that cannot be removed without destroying the transponder. I asked the K-Tag authority if I should get a sticker for my TOAD, they recommended that I not get the sticker for the TOAD because the readers have a high chance of reading both transponders. Really the transponders are not needed if you register with the tolling authority because they can read the license plate. If you are registered, you still get the same reduced tolling rate even if you do not have the transponder. However, the readers will sometimes pick up the transponder in the motorhome and also read the license on the TOAD and you end up double charged. You must review your statement to insure that does not happen. If you do not register the license on the TOAD it would be harder to spot and contest a double charge.

I really wish there was a "standard" tolling system that would work for all toll roads in the US. The individual tolling agencies should be forced to sit down and settle on a unified system with information sharing.

Supposedly, thr pass that Openroads is offering does that. I haven't heard of anyone that has used it.
Later...

EZ Pass is the pass used for the states mentioned. I know in PA, the EZ Pass toll is about 40 to 50% less than the non EZ Pass toll charge. It is definitely worth checking into.

UNI pass is what I settled on, works in the Rv and toad.
I had a PA ez-pass but it required a special one for the RV due to weight and a separate on for the car

Innovative Toll Solutions covers 48 states except AK and HI. There's an initial up front cost for the transponder + shipping and then $24/yr. The transponder comes programmed w/the number of axles you set at the time of purchase. It mounts at the top center of your coach windshield w/suction cups.
Good customer service. Had an issue once where tolls in Dallas, TX did not read my transponder and billed me by mail. I paid the tolls + processing fees, provided a claim to the company and was fully reimbursed within 3 weeks. No questions asked.
We use it. It's convenient. No stopping to pay tolls. No mailing in toll fees or paying processing fees. One size fits all. Easy and hassle-free.
Good luck

We used to have a toll pass from EZ Pass for both the Ram and the motorcycle.
Well since these do not work in Texas we switched to the Open Roads setup. We have used it in Florida so far and it is working great.
If be chance you plan on going to Texas and thru that area, get the Open Roads Pass instead of the EZ Pass. Open Roads cover all of the lower 48 states, EZ Pass just the states listed.
As far as being charged double for the toad while towing, leave the transponder in the package it came in. It does not pick it up.
