Tore up my awning

Well, Dummy me drove out of the campground today....with my awnings out. Front two have minor, cosmetic damage, but the rear tore through the fascia Than fully, I was able to retract it almost all the way so that I could tie it down. Drove home no issues:

Who does one go to for a repair of such? A body shop? mother ship? Girard direct? DIY?. I'm sure insurance will cover it, but I fear they may drop me or raise my rate. Either way, I need to get it repaired.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
TIA

Sure sorry to hear that Bruce. Any photos that others might be able to share repair ideas or experiences. As expensive as awnings are, it might be an insurance claim.

I'll snap some pictures tomorrow. I did not taken of the incident, or the initial damage. I was too busy trying to repair it

Sorry to hear of your challenges Bruce. I ran down a guy in the campground with his door awning out a couple months ago.

How fast were you going before you new you had trouble?

I would expect an insurance claim as well. Those awnings are pricey.

Bruce, it's not exactly next door to where you are in New York, but Girard has a relatively new manufacturing plant and service center in Red Bay, Alabama (home to Tiffin Motorhomes). I know several individuals, including a couple of Entegra owners, who have gone there for Girard awning service & repair. To a person they report being beyond satisfied with the experience.

And if you've never been to Red Bay, well, let's just say you have missed an interesting and memorable cultural experience.

I was put putting out of the campground. Scuffed the front awning on a tree but caught the leading edge of the rear and broke the fascia in two. I did a walk around too, so I have no excuse. Just dumbness, which I am famous for.

The real challenge was retracting them. I tried retracing using VT but they would not budge. I decided to try the remote control located in the freezer bay. That worked and the front retracted. The rear was more challenging. Three campers helped me out and little by little we were able to get the rear closed to pithing a few inches of fully closed. I used to rope to tie it down for transport. Made it home unscathed. I'll drop some pics in a bit.

NIRVC has agree to take her in when and IF they can even get an awning. The fabric is fine, but my guess it they will replace the entire canister. In the mean time, she's drivable. I have an AIR scheduled for summers end. I wonder if they would replace it. I'll pose the question to Joyce. She's golden when it comes to things like this.

Bruce, don't feel bad. With all of the pilot training, and having been an Air Force crew chief inspecting and sending planes off every morning I should know better. I almost left the door awning out. Thankfully Karen saw it when she sat in her seat. After that experience, I now do the double walk around, once looking down and under the coach, turn around at the drivers side corner post walking back looking up, checking the slides at the top, antennas, etc. For me it is easier not trying to look up and down with a single walk around. It almost happened to me missing an awning.

Yes, we will be more vigilant in the future. Still waiting for a picture to load.

Buddy110, Sorry to hear about your trouble. In the 70's and 80's live across the river from you.

I would not rush to the insurance company, but I have a 1K deductible on my MH. I would do an assessment of the parts needed and get the manufacturer to price them out and give you instructions on replacing them.

I't might be much less then you expect to order the parts and replace them yourself or take the unit in with parts in hand.

Ya, I have Joyce working on it as well. I will see what she says.

Thanks all for the encouragement

My routine before leaving the campsite is to walk around coach and tow car 3 times before I move. Look underneath for jacks to be fully retracted, above for satellite dish & antenna both stowed, awnings in, coach at ride height, tow car hooked correctly, tires thumped on both vehicles, windows closed on both vehicles and shore power and water disconnected and stowed. I have surprised myself on second and third loop at discovering something overlooked a few times.

I also walk my route out before departure to make sure of no low obstructions
or tight turns that would be complicated with tow car. It really comes down to basic RV rule, Never be in a HurryÖÖ.

Here's a picture. The fabric is good. I can't recall tell if the mechanism is unscathed until I open it back up. It is possible that the fascia can be related independently.

Burce, the good news.....that does not look bad enough to have to go to Red Bay Alabama unless you just want the experience.

Buddy110,
I just got back from going to Ghirad at Red Bay. I have only good things to say, also stay at Red Bay Acres right next to the factory, great park and experience plus restaurant site. I had them do a full check a, clean and adjust on all 3 awnings. Not under warranty bust still no charge. The coach ahead of me was a different story, older Entegra that had the lag bolts striped out. There was a charge for that one. Call them and talk to them, but it is worth the trip to have it fixed right the first time.
