If the angle between the toad and the tow vehicle is to much, usually the tow vehicle end being higher, in a hard stop, the rear end of the tow vehicle rises and the nose of the toad drops. There is the potential of the toad nose being jammed under the the tow vehicle at the extreme. Or the tow bar, hitch receiver, or adapter plate breaking because they are designed for a lineal pull not massive downward compression.

That is the engineering facts.

Here is what finally happens to the tow bar if not level. It's like bending a piece of metal back and forth. When a tow bar is level it's hard to break pushing equally from both ends. I believe the causing factor of my tow bar breaking was the constant push of not have toad brakes. Not an engineer, just an actual experience. Having a tow bar break is not an enjoyable experience.

Also why I will never buy the cheapest tow bar again.

People tend to underestimate how much the force is on these towbar systems. If the geometry is wrong, the forces are multiplied.

In addition age, even the tow bar manufactures say they are worn out at 7-10 years. Metal being pushed and pulled by 5,000 lbs is going to wear out. Add an angle to that, as Marc said, it speeds it up.

I was going to replace my aged tow bar when we got home. I didn't make it.
