My Green Mountain Davy Crockett fits in the tall storage bay on the driver side. We used it a lot in the RGValley last winter. Man was it windy! I found I could place a lounge chair on its side as a wind break. Helped a lot with even temp and fuel consumption.

Howdy!
We fulltime and I have a Treager Scout we carry and use. I like that it will fit in our cross through storage. Purchased it over the Davey Crockett for that reason. I’m just about out of our pellets I purchased, so any one recommend where it get a new supply? Treager recommends you only use their pellets. Anyone use anything’s other than Treager pellets in theirs?

Traeger made me a believer
We’ve experimented with a lot of different travel grills and outdoor cooking methods. I’m now convinced that our final version of a travel kit is going to be our GMG Davey Crockett (fits fine in the slide tray of our ‘15 DEQ - just can’t get the tray to come out the driver’s side with it in there), and the 17” Blackstone Griddle we just bought. The Weber 1200 with a Grill Grate set is nice and the most convenient of the travel grills I’ve tried, but we like the food better off the other two. We have a full sized Weber Genesis that we keep at our winter lot and with it and the Davey Crockett and the griddle we’ll have a great combo. ymmv...

The Treager PTG grill is nice and small but one pile of crap. Temp won't stay set , one time you use it will stay at 350 next time thing will shoot up to 550 . Next time you can't get it up to 300, and smoke up whole camp spot. Then start burning back in the pellet bin, used it all last year about 50 or more days like that. Went back to propane grill this year.

The Scout is brand new on the market replacing the PTG, how do you like it, is it holding the temperature well? Ithas the upgraded temperature settings That is one the model I have been looking at becasue of the size.
Best prices I have seen on Pellets is 30 lbs at Costco for $20. and 20 lbs of Pit Boss pellets at Walmart for $18. I don't believe the Treager pellets bull. Swenster from the forum has never used Treager pellets and his grills are over 5 years old.
I use the Pit Boss pellets in a smoke generator I use for cold smoking cheese and they work great with good flavor.
A poor mans pellet smoker, $29.95 that works great. I have been cold smoking cheeses and cold smoked some pork chops before grilling, both outstanding, but it is not a pellet grill or a substitute for one.

Like RVs, not all pellet smokers are created equal. The key to a good pellet smoker is the controlller that maintains the temperature, usually in the 225 to 250 range for barbecuing ribs, butt or brisket, and higher for chicken. The temperature is critical because time, when barbecuing, is very important and without a constant temperature the time to get to the desired internal temperature can’t be predicted.
Look for a pellet smoker with a high quality controller. The best ones have PID controllers which means the feedback control continuously modulates the heat process to maintain a very precise temperature. Other features, like WiFi monitoring, aren’t worth much if the temperature in the box is varying greatly.

Bill, exactly what you are saying was the problem with our Samsung Confection oven(s). The average temperature was within Samsung's specs, but the food was uneatable, raw in the center, burnt on the outer edges,
I can relate to constant temperature control being the difference between tasting good and kind of cooked. Good input, thanks.

I looked at the little Traeger, but bought the Green Mountain Davy Crockett. It is made of much thicker metal and has superior temperature control. I like the fold-down legs too. I removed the short spring feet to make is short enough to sit in the pull-out tray. The wifi control, which I thought would be a gimmick, is great.

That experience rekindled my interest in pellet grilles.
The next weekend, I was able to buy a Tailgater for $100 off and have been using it ever since.
It cooks perfect bacon, Tri-Tip, chicken, and even pizza. These dishes I can vouch for.
We are cooking at Tiger Run and this thing is wonderful. You can smoke, slow cook, or sear. The temperature control is fantastic and the fuel consumption isn’t bad at all.
This is a picture of the kids and the “Tailgate Pizza” they made.

P.S. I wish my sons eyes were open.

Matt, anything that cooks perfect bacon is all good with me!
