Traveling in below freezing Temps

I have a 2016 Entegra Cornerstone. Going from Louisville, KY to Atlanta, GA week on 2/17/25 and temps while driving are going to as low as 22 degrees. I want to be fully loaded with fresh water, and will have my Aquahot powered by the engine heat.

If I travel down the road at 65 mph, will the "air flow" from outside suck all the heat out of the basement and cause my water lines and holding tanks to freeze?

Your hydronic heating system should keep your water compartments from freezing and then some. Get some remote Bluetooth temps' sensors to monitor. Your system should have engine heat transfer so engine heat should provide all it needs and should also be able to heat the interior without running the burner.

I would turn on the heat exchanger zones in the basement and house so the heat is blowing into the space. Using the actual heat the engine loop is receiving.

You will lose minor heat in the basement, but they are relatively sealed per say.

The RV in motion will also keep water from freezing in the tank even if the doors were wide open. IE think of a bubbler in the marine application.

Water freezes quickly in the hoses, pipes, and fittings. Watch the tank outlet drain valves if they are not inside the compartment.

A 2/17/2025 forecast as low as 22F is 6 days out from today. The Washington Post back on July 2, 2024 had an article on the accuracy of US weather forecasting. Paonia, Colorado near where we reside is off on the temperature forecast by an average of 5.9F for just a one day (24 hour) forecast. Accurate is a forecast to within 3F. Within 12F like Paonia is dismal weather forecasting. Our weather forecasts in the Rockies are quite poor, but for the east coast an accurate forecast is around 3 to 4 days out. I would wait until a more accurate forecast is available.

I’ve traveled quite a bit in below freezing temps in my both of my Cornerstones and my Anthem, a fair amount of it was in below zero temps. I wouldn’t rely on just your engine providing enough heat, I know mine doesn’t when it gets really cold. If you turn on all of your heat zones (including basement) and run your Aquahot boiler, you won’t have any problem at all. The worst part is keeping the driver’s area warm and comfortable while driving, that huge windshields transfers A LOT of cold air to the cab area. Definitely lower your sun shades on both sides, that helps retain the heat quite a bit.

We travel on below freezing temps in and out of Michigan on a regular basis sometimes down to zero.

I have had no issues with basement temperature. I have a Govee remote temperature sensor in the basement and the basement stays well above freezing with the basement temp set on 50.

Our challenge is normally keeping the coach comfortable inside. Engine heat wide open and Aquahot running off the engine will not keep the coach close to 70 degrees when we are doing 70 MPH and the exterior temperature is below freezing.

I use Aquahot on diesel heat along with engine cab heat. The Aquahot maybe grabbing some engine heat from the engine heat loop as well. On a good cold morning without any sun helping even that does not keep the inside temperature up.

Then I run the generator and will use the coach fireplace along with a small electric heater on 1/2 power (700 watt) setting. Plus the Aquahot on diesel and the engine heat.

As soon as we stop the coach warms up quickly. Even in stop and go traffic. But rolling down the freeway a good amount of cold gets in (or removes heat) from the windshield and the coaches are not really airtight.

As soon as we get south like Tennessee or get the sun hitting the coach we generally don’t have a problem. But a nice Michigan January morning at about 6 AM is a little outside what these coaches are great for on the road.

Parked at a campground - No issues keeping the coach and basement warm. We get a little claustrophobic after a couple days inside the coach when it is really freezing out but we never get cold inside.

We have heard the new dash that Entegra went to in 2023 gives more heat or cooling from the dash system.

FWIW I spend ALL winter parked in a ski area. I have experience temps from 0 to 25 this winter, with 60mph wind gusts. I am not sure of your layout, with my 18 Aspire the only compartment that does not have a heat vent is the water tank. The supply line to the pump runs from the OUTSIDE wall of the tank, passenger side, back across to the utility compartment. That outlet also connects to the low point drain which is exposed to the outside. That particular connection is the one that has frozen. I wound up using a 3' section of electric heat tape, looped and zip tied to the fitting. I still have issues with the Whirlpool water dispenser freezing from time to time, guess I need to crawl around and find the 1/4" flexible line which comes from the back of the fridge to the supply line. I appreciate that not every buyer does what I do, but I am disappointed that Entegra makes a point about heated compartments, but the one that is prone to freezing is unprotected.
