Trav'ler for Dish v. Trav'ler for Direct modified for Dish

Entegra still doesn't offer Trav'ler for Dish. A dealer said the mod to convert a Direct Trav'ler is $600-800. Seems a Trav'ler manufactured for a specific service would be better than a modification. Amazon sells a Dish Trav'ler for the same price Entegra sells the Direct Trav'ler. There would be some installation cost but could it be as much as the mod?

Any input?

Thanks!

IIRC, a DirecTV Trav'ler can be modified to Dish, but not the other way around.

It might cost a bit more to start with the factory-installed unit, but if you keep the DirecTV parts, the roof unit can be converted back should you change providers (or sell the coach to someone who prefers DirecTV) in the future. If you have an entire Dish Trav'ler installed and want to change to DirecTV in the future, you'll need to install an entirely new Trav'ler.

Just something to consider.

Your in motion "dome" should be able to handle Dish HD already.

Vance, a couple here have done the Mod for $300. Voltdoc did an excellent how to post with photos.. It was just posted the other day about an RF Mogel Dish that looks very interesting, good reading on the entire post. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f278/trav...ml#post3623827

With the RF Mogel, it's just a matter of changing the LNB and program for which Sat provider you want. This would only apply if a new coach was being ordered and have it installed after delivery.

It does though not well. One sat at a time, one channel at a time, even heavy dew disrupts it.

If I were to order a new coach it would not have a "dome" on it.

Installation of a Traveler antenna is typically in the area of $350 to $450.

Vance

I posted about three years ago I modified my factory DirectTV to a Dish Travlr. Winegard sells the kit for about $350. If you are okay with tools and climbing a ladder you can do it in one afternoon. I tried to get Entegra to install a Dish format Travlr when my coach was being built, but they refused. At least now if you don't pay for the upgraded antenna you'll get the dome (which works with Dish or DirectTV. Not full HD w DirectTV) and also the prewiring for a Travlr.

The thing I discovered is you can convert a DirectTV Travlr to Dish, but not visa versa. It has to do with the cabling on the turret.

The alternative I'd suggest is search for a website that begins with "rvseniormom..." (forum rules say I can't say the website) and the man there did the groundbraking for installing a Dish Hopper3 setup with Joey. I did the conversion yesterday. Works great. Voltdoc did it also.

You'd still need the conversion kit $350, then buy the Hopper3, Joey, the new Hybrid LNB and a few parts. You'd gain HD 4K on any TVs plus a centralized recording DVR accessible via the Entegra wiring scheme and the ability to record up to 16 shows simultaneously as well as voice command remote. The equipment is available from vendors like SatelliteG...s, or SolidS......l. Cost about $500. It does require a two year contract.

Winegard SK-SWM3 or SK-3005 to SK-1000 conversion Kit#1 - RP-SK21

My opinion is that in-motions are basically junk..... they work poorly when they work well. IMHO, the Trav'ler runs rings around the in motions and I believe that some have posted recently that all the in-motions are going to stop working as of some date. Since I dont have one on this coach (I had one on my previous coach before I switched it over to a Trav'ler), I did not pay a lot of attention of that discussion, but you can probably find it within the past 2 months on here. I was unhappy being forced to take on DirecTV when I bought this 15 Anthem as this ). It was the only factory option that we had (and I still dont understand why Middlebury cant offer you one or the other service on the roof). However, Direct offers DNS service and I have found that it is worth all the money that it costs to get DNS service. It is a blessing to get all network channels from one location to avoid the calls to CS to change your service location as you move the bus from town to town. All JMHO on the in-motion, but mine was a complete pain.

DISH is great and we love our Trav'ler system despite the headaches caused by Winegard's lack of support for changes in DISH's technology. We have learned to deal with the idiosyncrasies, but this may not be for everyone.

Winegard Trav'ler is not keeping up with DISH's satellite deployment in regard to the Eastern Arc, nor do they seem to be addressing issues with the Hopper 3 and the "NO LNB Voltage" message. Despite repeated requests, Winegard appears to have no intention of ever addressing these issues.

For that reason I would suggest that if you are intent on sticking with DISH, get an RF Mogul instead of a Winegard. They don't support the Eastern Arc either at this time, but they also don't have Hopper 3 compatibility issues. Also I think switching to DirectTV, or back the other way, might be a less complex hardware change with them. And there is always the possibility that RF Mogul will add DISH EA support (however that would still require an LNB swap). When I talked to them they seemed responsive to the idea and would look into it.

What are the Hopper 3 issues? I dont have one in the bus but would like to better understand the problems you reference.

Gary, first you need to replace the stock Winegard Dish Pro Plus (DPP) LNB with the new DISH Pro Hybrid (DPH) model. About $40 and not a difficult job if you don't mind getting up on the roof. FYI the DPH LNB will work with the older Hopper without the problem described below (I have that configuration now).

The other issue is the Hopper 3 coax must be physically disconnected during satellite acquisition by the Trav'ler or you will get a "No LNB Voltage" error. This has something to do with a conflict between the Trav'ler electronics and the Hopper 3. Once the Trav'ler has acquired the sats you reconnect the coax and are good to go. Not a showstopper, just a PITA. Most use an A/B switch as a disconnect. BTW, the RF Mogul does not have this conflict.

Tom at rvseniormoments.com has some in depth blog posts on both of these topics.

Email me or call if you need more details...

Rob, have you had any hands on with the RF Mogul? The more I read about it the more interesting it sounds. It sounds like they bend over backwards to stay up on technology changes

Chuck, no, but I am intrigued as well. I sent them an email question about the eastern arc and had a reply in a few minutes. The said they didn't support it but would pass the request along to engineering. Haven't heard anything back so far but that was just a couple days ago. I then asked about the Hopper 3 and was informed that there is no hardware/software conflict with it and the RF Mogul, so no need to disconnect the coax.

If I didn't already have the Trav'ler I'd be taking a serious look at the RF Mogul. If RF Mogul ever supports the Eastern Arc that might even motivate me to switch.

Chuck, give RF Mogul a call and speak to Carlo. He will be happy to provide a plethora of technical info about their technology. Not like calling Winegard for sure.
