Using Dish Tailgater

I am camping under a tree and my rooftop Winegard Trav'ler cannot get a signal. I want to use the Tailgater instead. I hooked it to the coax jack by the electrical cord. I set the Tailgater out to a clear spot, but the Dish box indicates no signal.

I have never used this set up with our Anthem DEQ. Can you think what I might be doing wrong? I'm guessing it involves the switch below the main TV but I don't know. Thoughts?

Try hooking up the tailgater cable directly to the Sat receiver. My internal cabling would not work as it is not the correct RG #. I also point my tailgater handle North, not a requirement but I do it out of habit. I have not used my Overhead dome in 2 years as the TG gets all 3 sats automatically.

I think I'll have to try that when I get home. My receiver is kind of hidden away in a cabinet. Thanks.

Hooky,

On ours, the cable TV input goes to the back of the switch box. I unplugged that input to the switching box and plugged it into the back of the sat tuner. We then reconfigured our sat tuner to the dish type if different.

If you mean the coax jack by the electrical cord where you would connect cable tv, maybe you have to select "cable tv" on the TV ANT.DVD selector box even though you are using the Tailgater.

I tried that Flora. I think I need to try what Keith mentioned. Thanks to both.

Chuck, you might try doing what Keith suggested but rather than disconnecting the cable from the box, add a cable from the input sat connection on the box to the input side of your receiver. If you used an a/b switch on the cable you would never have to switch cables around. Then the tv would work in any signal configuration, satellite or cable just by selecting the proper buttons on the control box. Seems like it would be worth a try anyway.

I used a Tailgater for a while and ended up running a seperate coax straight from the receiver to the antenna bypassing the BOMB. I think the modulating feature and switches interfere with that pretty weak satellite signal.

Thanks to all. When I get back to the shop I'm going to run a separate coax and use an A/B switch. Until then I'm having fun relearning what the over the air signals carry. I wonder how many of those all-in-one pressure cookers they sell after advertising for 30 minutes straight? Heck I even find myself reaching for my wallet and we no way need one.

A great app if you have a smartphone is "Dish for my RV". Will point you to where the satellites are in the sky depending on your physical location. (Also, make sure the "handle" part of the Tailgater unit is pointing away from the satellites as well.)

Good luck!

The coax connection in the basements are usually used for cable tv in RV parks.... That coax cable usually has splitters on it to direct the cable TV signal to all the TV's.... Satellite Signals from the Dish to the Receivers will not work with splitters in line.
