Voltage Issues

Started the coach yesterday and a funny thing happend.

Coach started up ok, went to fast idle to bring up the airbags sooner. Bags filled up ok, but I noticed the the dash voltage guage indicator was bouncing from all over the place. Looked up at the Magnum Energy panels and both had red warning lights on, and warnings saying the voltage was 18+.

Took it off fast idle, the the red lights went out, but the needle in the voltage gauge on the dash was all over the place.

Almost sounds like it's voltage regulator time.

Any suggetions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

running on fast idle should have nothing to do either with the voltage or amperage produced by your coach. Voltage regulations would seem problematic.

Do you have a digital voltmeter? See if your DVM matches the dash

Voltage regulator or sense wire to it.

I would check that the alternator regulator is getting battery voltage sense before replacing the regulator.

The only way to get that much voltage from an alternator is if the voltage regulator failed, or at least stuck that particular time. However, the alternator has an integral regulator built into it, rather than having a separate "box" mounted away from the alternator so if the regulator is bad you'll need to replace the alternator.

Agree with Gary to verify the voltages with a meter. Have you checked the battery connections as well? Did the coach start without boost? Need to test the alternator output voltage to see if that’s the issue.

If you don't already have one (and IMO everyone with a motorcoach should have one on board), you can get a very nice auto-ranging DVM at Harbor Freight for between $50 and $75 bucks (equivalent to pro units costing >$350) ... and well worth every penny.

Looks like it IS the alternator.

It's a Leece-Neville, Model#8LHA2275V made by Prestolite Electric.

Can anyone tell me what the amperage should be. I think it's 170 amps ???

Having a terrible time up here in Canada, finding a 170 amp replacement. Closest seems to be a 180 amp.

Will that mess up my Allison 3000 ?

Cheers,

Cheers,
I would think that bigger is better in this case. It should not mess with the transmission.

Correct, that is a non issue.

But (OK large BUT) make sure it is the same kind (not necessarily brand) of alternator.

If a DUVAC alternator, you need another DUVAC alternator.

If your current alternator has these terminals, you need the same on the new one:

B+
IGN
SENSE

Make sure the new one is wired the same as the old one.
