Walmart DEF recall
Running low on DEF, no problem, there’s a Walmart close to where I’m staying. Did some shopping, picked up two containers of Walmart DEF. when the checker scanned she got an error message saying that this item could not be sold due to a recall.
Mind you, there was a full shelf of DEF in the store. Got the manager, tried to overwrite the register, no go. This item could not be sold. So I had to go back and get the more expensive stuff.
Some research suggests that a RAM truck dealer refused to honor the warranty on a diesel truck because they had used WalMart DEF. The claim was made that this product was not ISO certified and therefore constituted an illegal use, voiding the truck warranty. A claim was made on WM which responded by putting all the WM branded DEF on their “recall do not sell list”.
So if you stop at a WM hoping to get the cheaper DEF (7.88 vs 13.50) you may be out of luck.

Very interesting and will be watching to see how this pans out
When the Ford 6.7 debuted there were more than a few issues with DEF, however it was due to drivers putting DEF into the fuel tank when the smoke cleared
I usually get the cheap stuff at MENARDS and a week ago was available

Hmm... I just went on Walmart's web site and it still shows the $7.88 DEF for sale.

OUCH, I’ve been using DEF from the pump lately, but keep a Walmart container in the bay for backup. If you fill a container for backup, you need to be very careful to wipe the bottle opening so there will not be source of dried DEF residue or get in your tank.
Thanks for the heads up.

Any links to the information you researched? Google doesn't find it for me. Bought some WM DEF just a few days ago; it would be nice to clarify if this is an isolated incident or a widespread issue.

Remember that several years ago Walmart went to congress and tried (with lots of money donated to different congresspeople's reelection campaigns) to get a law that allowed them to sell a synthetic blend oil as "Fully Synthetic". They almost got away with it too if it wasn't for those pesky consumer watchdog groups howling about it and a few congress people who understood the word 'honesty'.
So in this case I know I'd default on the side of the Ram truck dealer knowing the kind of things WM has done in the past.

I just checked Walmart's recall site, their DEF product is not listed. Sounds like a local issue. https://corporate.walmart.com/recalls

Any factual links to this information?
There are no links on Walmart DEF being recalled, so it might just be the local RAM dealer and the local Walmart store.

I carry a 2 extra 2.5 gallon containers with me an refill them at Love’s, Flying J/Pilot or other bulk facilities just to be on the safe site. I have never purchased DEF at Walmart.

I just use the truck stops for DEF, no container to throw away and once full I can go another 4k+ miles towing. Even on the poorly thought out GM DEF fluid level system, you get a notice warning of a 100 miles left to go, which should be plenty of time to find a truck stop.

I bought two 2.5 gallon jugs of WalMart DEF yesterday afternoon in Louisiana..... no recall or DO NOT SELL here.
Story doesn't make a lot of sense.... DEF is DEF.... its all the same chemicals and mixed at the same ratio... I hear DEF can be outdated and it is not a good idea, I am told, to use old DEF (more than a year old). YOMV

I don't know if this info completely "solves" the issue; however, Walmart Super Tech DEF is API Certified, and here's the definition from the API website:
"Diesel exhaust fluid marketers that have demonstrated that their products satisfy the requirements of the most recent and applicable edition of ISO 22241, Diesel engines – NOx reduction agent AUS 32, may be licensed to display the API Diesel Exhaust Fluid Certification Mark."
Makes me confident enough to continue using Super Tech... Thanks,
BG

Yes, DEF is DEF, and cannot even be called DEF unless it meets the standards. The issue raised by the OP likely is local and has some details of which we are not aware. Walmart DEF does have some history of problems, but has many more instances of fine performance. Old, contaminated, returned/diluted DEF have all been reported from Walmart and this may be the substance of the OP’s post. Walmart brand (Supertech?),per se, is not DEF that fails to meet ISO standard 22241, but a bad quality DEF found in a system may, in fact, have come from Walmart where quality control over inventory may be wanting. I suspect that is the case in the OP, and why the local store is not selling any more until the issue is resolved.

DEF is DEF and if stored properly last for years
Simply CH4N2O diluted with pure water
Only a couple places, fertilizer plants, diluting it
Ver soluble so rehydration is straight forward
