My green foam ring will not be used for rodent control, it will only be used to keep the heat in during freezing temps, but it could be used for both.

Cougerkid, nice freeze protection set up, but I coming home when it gets cold long enough to need heat tape

I like cheap too. This is cheap and works for me. It is foam rubber pipe insulation (kinda looks like a small black pool noodle). You can get it at Walmart, Home Depot, etc. I think I used 3/4" or 1", just something I had laying around the shop. It not only insulates against the cold (which was my primary goal), but should keep out most critters. It is water proof also, so doesn't hurt it to get it wet. Pool noodles are too stiff, but the pipe insulation compresses easily to give a nice tight fit. You could probably get 4 or more out of one stick. I keep a couple extra in the coach. They loose their shape after 6 months or so.
