Water Pump Surging.

I get a 1-2 second burst of sound from my water pump every minute or two. I have checked every faucet for drips, and looked all over and found no leaks. Could it be from water bypassing the internal check valve in the pump itself?

It's a leak somewhere including it could be the internal of the pump. I had one in the 90's, I finally changed the pump and problem was gone. Dont know if it was a bad check valve or bad diaphragm. But it was back flowing.

Check your 'Fill' valve setting, if you have that style of setup. If it's bad or half on, the pump will want to keep running occasionally.

Short cycling of pump W/O demand (faucet/shower etc) indicates a LEAK
Could be:
City water inlet check valve leaking ---dripping to outside
FILL valve leaking thru....round robin of water from/to tank
Water Pump internal check valve not sealing....open faucet and run water full flow...might clear any debris on that check valve
WH Tank T&P Relief Valve weeping...loss of air pocket
Toilet Supply valve leaking thru....water in bowl increasing
Outside shower....dripping
Any one of the numerous fittings/'T' connections leaking
(Water heater fittings/faucet fittings etc are sometimes just hand tight)

***Place some TP next to/around any suspect fitting...check later for dampness

If you have easy access to pump suction line...disconnect it from pump
Turn on city water supply and see if water flows backwards out pump suction side

I had the same issue turned out I had to adjust the ck valve on the water pump. There are 2 small Allen screws on the pump. Look close to find them. Make some slight adjustments and your problem will go away. I used to think it was a water leak which was not the case

Different issue

There are NO adjustments for check valve

You made an adjustment to the BYPASS which SOME pumps have
Your pump has an adjustment screw for the Pressure switch (set point it will start) and an adjustment screw for the Bypass (set point for when it starts opening)
IF you adjust bypass to low...pump will not shut off.

That is why it is important for folks to post Brand/Models ----apples to apples vs apples to pineapples

I had an issue where the pump would go on for a half second every five minutes or so. Found the leak under the kitchen sink. It was a super slow leak but water would drip off the passenger side front slide out from the outside corner. Just a drop every minute or so. It was hard to notice.

I might have not noticed the leak when hooked to city water because we were parked in grass. But I unhooked everything possible the night before leaving and noticed the pump sound when we got in the bed.

Below are three photos of a "water pump tester" I fabricated and have used a number of times. Ignore the white male plug screwed into the swivel fitting - it is just there to keep the female threads clean while the tester is in storage.

The Test Procedure is:

- With the water pump turned off, disconnect the swivel fitting on the output side of the pump.

- Connect the swivel fitting on the tester in its place.

- Put the clear hose on the other end of the tester in an empty bucket.

- Open the valve in the middle of the tester.

- Turn on the water pump. Water should flow from the pump, through the tester, into the bucket.

- Watch for bubbles as the water flows through the clear tubing, which may be indicative of a problem.

- Let the water run for 20 seconds or so. With the water pump still on, turn the valve in the middle of the tester to off. The pump should stop and be silent.

- Pull up a comfortable chair and sit there for as long as it was previously taking for you to hear the pump cycling. If the pump cycles at the same or similar interval, you need to repair or replace the pump. If the pump is not cycling, you have a leak somewhere in the coach plumbing system.

All the parts to make the tester are readily available at just about any hardware store, except the swivel fitting that attaches to the output port on the water pump. You'll probably have to hit an RV parts store or possibly Camping World to get one of those.

On the 4008 and 4048 sure flow pumps you can unscrew the clear bulb a bit and bleed off any air that might be trapped. Start with the easy stuff.

Suction side of pump.....

Air leak would cause problems with priming of the pump
Possibly some foaming of water at faucet

But being on suction side...downstream of pump internal check valve it would not cause pump to short cycle
That is due to loss of pressure on discharge side of pump...pressure switch side

I like your tester....simple straight forward approach
