Water softener and filters

Some of you owners with more experience.....

I bought one of the On the Go water softeners and a pair of GE filters (the charcoal and 5 micron sediment filters). I am now back from my "Summer and Fall escape the summer heat" trip and will be off the road for 2 or 3 months. I am wondering, what do I now do with both of those units? Should I try to dry out the pellets in the water softener, or just let the water or moisture in there stay in there. Same question for the filters.... remove and dry them out, replace after 3 months, let them sit?

No clue.... advice solicited!

Gary

I've been using my water softener for many years and when I return from the snow bird trip I regenerate the resin and let it sit full of water over the summer. I do use it in July when I do my annual trip to YNP and the Tetons. I did replace the resin after 7 years as it was not doing the job. The new resin is the gold brand and very efficient. I also leave my in house water filter in and replace it just prior to my trip south to escape the cold and snow of Montana.

That's basically what I do. I regenerate the softener, blow it out and place it in my basement at home where it can't freeze. In spring I use the Sani-System product rather than bleach to sanitize the entire water system. This is the only product that is EPA approved for sanitizing water systems, yet so many RVers use bleach, even though it has plenty of drawbacks.

Sani-System, is a quaternary ammonium chloride based product proven to kill 99.9% of all bacteria in 60 seconds. Chlorines and peroxides are oxidizers but this true sanitizing solution is fast acting so it only needs to remain in your fresh water system for a few minutes. It doesn’t attack the plastic lines and tank walls so it flushes out clean without the residual traces that chlorine leaves. It’s even safe to use in RO systems without damaging their polyamide membrane.

I pull the filters and drain as best I can. If they are still good then I put them in the freezer until next traveling season. I change my filters fairly often so most times I throw them away. I buy filters in bulk from www.rvwaterfilterstore.com as they are cheaper and very good filters. I just regenerate the softener and drain water as much as possible without pouring the resin out. I store it in my barn and it doesn't freeze.

Good info, I will try this both at home and on the go system.
