National Interstate required only me to take the course.

For what it's worth, it took maybe a total of 4 hours (and does not have to be completed in one sitting) and is all online. It's essentially pass/fail and I can't imagine anyone with a driver's license not being able to pass.

I was told the certificate is good for three years.

I have been with USAA almost 50 years. In the past when I needed insurance, investments, banking, etc, I just called them. There was never any question--best deal, best price, best claim service--they had all of my business.

Over the years things have changed. They have dramatically expanded the membership. They have gone to many third parties--mortgages, RV insurance, etc. In my opinion service has dramatically dropped. Customer service is out the window. No on has an answer so they have to put you on hold to find someone with an answer. Three security questions and a phone password later you may finally get an answer.

Several years ago they recommended Progressive (third party.) What a rip off. After they substantially increased my premium (no claims) I went shopping and changed to Allied, a Nationwide Company. Better price and better coverage. Losing my trust in USAA.

I have National General through Good Sam. Got notice of a 10% increase, no claims, no tickets, excellent credit, paid in full. Gave them a call, and they mentioned some nonsense about the cost of doing business in Virginia going up. (At least they didn't try to blame it on global warming, climate change, hole in the ozone, or whatever the crackpots are calling it nowadays).

Got a quote from Nationwide, just a little over half of what National General was trying to rip me off for. Guess I should thank them for trying to gouge me! Never would have guessed that Nationwide would be that much lower!
