Whats going on with insurance??

Some of you will remember that I posted to the list that for no apparent reason, my coach insurance went up ~ 30% from last year to the next year.... No claims, no tickets, no nothing. Just a huge increase.

I also have a remaining mortgage on the sticks and bricks and got a letter last week from my mortgage holder that I owned them like an additional $150 a month and in trying to figure out what was going on, discovered that my house insurance had gone up 33% and the escrow was "short". Again, no claims, no damages for past 10 years (probably no claims for past 15 years and that was for a hurricane). Asked for explanation, and get nothing. Credit rating is bullet proof. No explanations other than one of my insurance agents said "Gary, 2015 has been a bad year for most insurance companies and claims are way up... distracted drivers, lots of losses, floods, tornadoes, etc. etc.". SO I have now spent essentially 3 full days shopping insurance, and found rates all over the board from amazing to amazingly reasonable, and all big companies. Also, huge differences across agents. It was pretty much like buying airline tickets or going to a casino - gambling. If I didn't really put time into this, I really could have gotten taken to the cleaners. Just thought I would encourage everyone to carefully examine their insurance coverages and rates when they next renew. I got much better coverage and additional liability insurance that I have needed for a while, and am paying significantly less than last years rates overall. Maybe its only Louisiana, but "its crazy out there"!!!!

Did FEMA/NOAA reevaluate the flood zone maps for where you live? Caught a bunch of home owners up where I'm at a few years back when they did. Pushed them into a flood zone and the banks required additional insurance. Vehicle insurance went up also due to the higher risk of loss associated with where the vehicle is garaged.

Often the first year's premium is low to snag your business, then it jumps and they hope you won't bother to hunt for new insurance.

Climate change has made many insurance companies raise rates, they are exposed to more claims as weather gets more unpredictable, one of the outcomes deniers don't try to explain. I'm not trying to be political, I'm just a retired science teacher that pays attention to facts. Distracted drivers are also in the increase, texting can be as bad as drinking. Add in the issue of legal weed in many states and a lack of testing for it's impairment, accident rates are increasing.

Gary. Same hear in Texas. The actuators have reevaluated the entire area because of all the floods, hail damage and tornadoes over the last two years. I was in the no claim status till this spring, my rates went up on the coach prior to the hail damage claim to my home and jeep.

I have been insurance shopping as well.

Same thing just happened to a good friend of mine. Put him in touch with my Independence agent. She got his payments lowered $150 a month, plus found out he was just outside of the new flood plan map and was able to save him another $640 per year. She also did all the paper work with his mortgage company and got the refund check from FEMA for him. He also received more coverage with the lower rate. It does pay to shop.

My coach is a separate insurance issue. I switched from National Interstate last year, and National General the year before, and am now with Allied (which is a Nationwide company I think). I saved a bundle.

Then I bundled my house, my cars, and an umbrella policy all within one company which was Progressive Service Insurance (seems like a different division of Progressive - their on line quotes were no where close to the rates I was able to get with a small insurance company that just happened to handle them also). Once again, the range of quotes for the whole bundle ranged from in excess of $7.5K a YEAR TO AROUND $3.4k per year.... all AM BEST AA rated or better companies quoting. I literally spent 3 full days talking and repeating the same information for a bunch of agents and companies, local and on-line and the range of quotes for exactly the same coverage was amazing. It pays to "shop around".

And yes, I think there is a ton of "bait and switch" going on in the insurance business. My house company didn't bother to tell me they raised my rates 33%, but they sure told my mortgage company (which paid without question) who got in touch with me only because my escrow account would have been a few bucks lower than the federally mandated "slush fund" amount ($3,000 worth of slush). I think they pray that you will not look at your rate upon renewal and the huge increase will escape your attention.

I forgot to mention.... the S&B happens to be on top of what is supposed to be the second highest "mountain" in Louisiana (approximately, 390' ASL), so no problems with floods. A LOT of Louisianians and Texans are learning a lot about flood insurance these days. The amount of rain and flooding we have had has just been amazing. Thankfully, that is not something I worry about here.

I'm having the same issue with Nat......wide...been with them 30 years, no claims on the home in all that time, but ratse just keep going up, no auto / RV claims in 20 years...Got a quote from Farmers, that was 15% lower, but once you dug into the policy, I would have to add more coverage. When I get back from my summer RVing in Sept, insurance will be the #1 on my list to take care of. My agent just keeps saying I need to help pay for everyone else's claims who choose to live in flood, fire hurricane, mudslide and high crime areas.

Unfortunately we all have to do much more due diligence with all types of insurance. Seems we have to shop nearly every year. My Airstream trailer only went up $15. But I went through the renewal with a fine tooth comb and was ready to start shopping.

The mantra from the insurance companies is the same "Woe is us. We had to pay out a lot of claims in Timbuktu etc." No problem with any company making a profit just isn't any sense to what happens.

I've Had National General for several years and have tried several times over the years to beat their rates, but have never been able to come close. I see people changing insurance companies and saving money, but last company, which was either Allied or Progressive, had rates in the $5000 yr. range for the Cornerstone and Dodge pickup. Noel

When we come off the road and bought a S&B changed/bundled insurance with Farmers (which ended up being Foremost for home and Farmers for truck)

Truck coverage was a 6 month policy.....and every renewal it went up $20-$30
After the 3rd renewal.........I questioned my agent and he checked and stated 'Oops----a discount was not applied'----OK great.
Next renewal----increase again.
Questioned agent (by now premiums had increased by almost $200 overall since 1st policy ----no changes in policy/no tickets/no accidents/no infractions/no claims etc)
Agent stated that I could cancel and he could then write a NEW policy for same amount as original ---------my reply was then just correct pricing on current policy. Can't do that

Started shopping.
Various companies.........all could lower premiums with same FULL Coverage.
Then I checked with 'The Hartford' and AARP.
Same line by line coverage......same deductible and premium was same price as Farmers (1 yr w/Hartford same pricing as 6 mos w/Farmers)

Then checked coverage/policy for house.........it had increased over same time period by only $50.
But just for giggles I checked with Foremost DIRECTLY........
W/AARP Foremost increased line/by line coverages (house $14K increase, other structures $8K increase, personal property $10K increase, etc) for SAME yearly premium

I changed both truck and house insurances------
Called Farmers Agent and gladly informed him that his services were no longer needed.

I had Allied last year, the raised my rates to almost $4000 for two cars and the MH. Checked around and found that The Hartford through AARP was only $2,300 and better coverage.

Had Hartford, second year raise was $1800, so shopped and moved. Now have Safeco, one of the few who would quote my Cornerstone because of replacement value cost.
