Windshield, it was only a matter of time

Going South on I65 I picked up a ding in the windshield from a rock thrown up from a vehicle ahead of me. Could cover it with a nickel so I contacted Safelight in Bowling Green, KY. Meet the repair vehicle in a parking lot and they repaired the windshield in about 45 minutes. They took care of contacting my insurance and the whole transaction was transparent to me.

Interesting, they put a puck on the damaged area and drew a vacuum to get rid of any moisture. Then they applied an epoxy and placed a UV light to harden it. They said the epoxy was harder then the glass and should keep the damage from spearing out to a line crack. We will see. You can still see the damaged area, but as it is down and out of my sight line that is not an issue. The guys at Safelight were great.

99% chance you'll loose the windshield to another rock before you have an issue with that repair .

Glad that your windshield fix wasn't as bad as the turkey hitting my mirror.

Safelite has got their act together and good to hear from what you described is the same process applied across the nation.

Same experience with Safelite. Picked up a chip on a Sunday. The next day they were at my site in the RV park, 60 miles from Lubbock, and fixed it.

I learned this tip after I let my chip get dirt in it. Pull over as soon as you get the chip and cover it with clear tape. I carry a roll of clear packing tape from the $ store. Once dirt gets in the chip cracks, it's like a tattoo, it won't come out.

The last chip I had I pulled into the next truck stop and got the mobile windshield guy to do mine. $15. and it looked better than the 2 precious chips I had done with Safelite

Two new motorhomes each w/ a rock chip w/I 750 miles of the dealership. Unfortunately a fact of life for our large windshields.

Safelite in Lo$t Wage$ did a couple on our '15 and when he was done, they couldn't be seen. I do, however, tape them as Brobox suggested to keep out the dirt.

We hit a small bird the other day....or perhaps a VERYVERY large insect...we had a yellow smear. Scared the heck out of both of us, and sounded like a largish golf-ball sized rock....but No damage to our windshield....not so much for the bird/bug.

Two weeks ago heading west on I-10 had a rock hit/chip, found a local shop and was back on the road in about an hour. The VERY next morning, still traveling west on I-10, had another rock hit one mile from exit I was due to take. Took exit, at the bottom of the ramp was a Binswanger Glass shop. Pulled in and within an hour was repaired and on our way. Good luck on the quick repairs, bad luck on I-10 rocks.

I found out the hard way, getting them repaired ASAP is the important part. Getting dirt in the chip, or the chip getting larger is the worst things that can happen to have a repair that is not perfect. Smart moving getting your chips repaired ASAP. I have also found that large truck stops normally have a mobile chip repair guy in the area.
