Windshield repair, anyone ever heard of this?
Took my 2015 Anthem to Safelite to get 3 bullseyes repaired. The Technician repaired all three and then told me that federal law states that windshields can only be repaired 3 times and then the windshield must be replaced. He said he wasn't sure about RV's and I should check with my insurance company. Anyone ever heard of this? BTW I've had 5 chips repaired on this windshield, all less than the size of a quarter. My insurance company was not aware of that on RV's.

I had sorta the same pitch from Safelite except he said 6 repairs. USAA bought it, and I got a new windscreen for my towed. Did not discuss that for the camper however

As I understand the Safelite windshield chip repair process, a big part of the service includes their insurance against subsequent breakage of the windshield. If your windshield develops a running crack from the chip they repaired, it's their insurance that pays for the windshield replacement, not your insurance. Is it possible that the 5 or 6 chip repair limit is not a motor vehicle legality issue, rather it's driven by the insurance coverage that Safelite provides when they repair a chip?
I don't know; just wondering if that makes sense?
Take care,
Stu

Safelite states on their web site they'll repair up to 3 chips per visit. Since time is money I suspect its because if there's more than 3 to repair its more cost effective to just replace the windshield as the cost of commonly available windshields is not all that high. Exceptions to this rule would be expensive windshields found on some luxury cars, exotic cars, large motorhomes, etc. Windshield demand for such vehicles are small so the cost of small production runs pushes the unit price up.
Companies that do windshield repair are pretty confident in their work as very few fail so if an occasional repair does fail they'll just eat the replacement cost. Their work is not covered by insurance. The occasional replacement is simply factored in as a cost of doing business.
If your insurance policy includes glass coverage then insurance providers are willing to waive the deductible and pay for the whole repair as it saves them money IF there are not too many to repair.

Actually, my paperwork from Safelite states that if the chip repair fails, they will refund the cost of the repair. Does not say that they will replace the windshield.
"In the very rare event that this occurs, we will credit the cost of the repair either toward a new windshield or, in the event of insurance work, back to the insurance company. Read our windshield repair limited warranty for more details."

Just read my receipt as well and it does not say they will replace the glass, just refund the cost of the chip repair.
