So I have read a ton of threads on scanners and even some on the sprinter forum, none have a definitive "Best" scanner.

I won't be changing fuel maps, injector pulse widths, fuel pressure etc. I just need to read all codes and clear them with access to possible reasons for the code and suggested fixes.

Some suggest the generic scanners at Wal-Mart and some suggest scanners that are over a $1000. I guess my top end would be $150 - $200.

I was hoping that if I narrowed it down to what I want to do as opposed to what is possible I might get a better feel for what to buy.

Scan Gauge II by Linear Logic. Does what you need it to do, has customizable X-Gauges that are Sprinter specific, and costs around $150.

I have a Scan Guage 11 in my 2016 Winnebago Era. Works fine for me. I bought it mainly to follow the fluid level of my DEF.

I remember a discussion on one of the forums that got Linear Logic's James DeLong involved in creating a bunch of X-gauges for the Sprinter, but I don't recall seeing a DEF tank level gauge on any of the coding sheets. It's not listed on the Scan Gauge website, I had a look last night.
EDIT: There's a "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Level" X-gauge, but it's listed under the "2014+ Mercedes Sprinter 2.1L Diesel »" list, so I'm not sure if it would work for me, I have the 3.0L V6 engine.
If you do find one, I'd be interested, as I'm pretty sure the MB gauge is flaky. I can't remember the last time I added DEF and my gauge hardly moves after hundreds of miles of driving. The X-gauge for fuel tank level seems very accurate.

I do not remember exactly how to program this. The readout is in percent of fluid remaining.

I found that and edited my prior post, but thanks for finding it, too.
That X-gauge is for the 2.1L I4 engine according to the Scan Gauge website list. I have the 3.0L V6, but since I have nothing to lose, I'll try it.
I printed the X-Gauge doc for adding/editing X-gauges. It's lengthy (tedious) but logical. One thing I do recall, if you pause for too long while entering data, it craps out the gauge and you have to start over.
I'll post up my results if it works for me. Which year/engine do you have, btw?

I added it about a half hour ago, and it seems to match the fill level that my dash DEF gauge shows. The question is, are they both right, or wrong?

I'll try filling the tank later this week, to see how accurate it is. (or isn't)

If it takes just a few drops of DEF, they might (both) be accurate.

I'll let you know if it works for me after I get out to the truck stop and see how much it will take. It's showing that my DEF tank is almost full.

Actually bought it for my 2014 bluetec diesel SUV, very happy to find it works on my sprinter. Never used it to check def levels but have used it to read and clear codes. I have the cheap model.

My Scangauge needed a firmware update so when I sent it in to have the update done I asked to have the MB 3.0l V-6 x gauges loaded- they did it with a smile and no extra charge - now I can see my transmission temp and def level (2015 chassis) and also see when a regen is done - oddly reassuring. Sometimes I watch the fuel level as well - very accurate as confirmed when I fill the tank - I know within a few tenths of a gallon how much it will take. Given the tedious process required to load x gauges manually it might be faster to send the unit in and have it done - especially if you have fat fingers
